Conditioners

Krilium The trade name of a soil conditioner. The solid form of Krilium has as active in-gredienl a copolymer of about equal molar proportions of vinyl ethanoate and the partial methyl ester of maleic acid. It may be formulated with lime, bentonite, etc. In aqueous form, Krilium contains a copolymer of about equal molar proportions of isobutene and ammonium maleamate. Other polymers are also used.

Coated abrasive products, once limited to sandpaper in woodworking shops, are versatile and efficient industrial tools. Machines ranging from portable Sanders to giant slab conditioners and roU grinders utili2e coated abrasives. Abrasive belt machines now perform many of the operations that were once the exclusive province of grinding wheels. 

Flocculants are also used for soHd—Hquid separations in other industries such as the sugar industry (1). Recent experiments have shown flocculants to be effective soil conditioners for agricultural land, which effectively reduce mn-off and erosion (2). However, they have not been used on a large scale for this appHcation. 

Hair conditioning can be associated with almost any hair product sold in the marketplace because they all claim some benefit to the hair when used. Thus the term hair conditioner can be appHed to such products as rinses, hair dressings, setting lotions, and hair sprays. Conditioners are used to provide different effects to the hair primarily ease of combing, sheen, and soft feel. 

Most carbide acetylene processes are wet processes from which hydrated lime, Ca(OH)2, is a by-product. The hydrated lime slurry is allowed to settle in a pond or tank after which the supernatant lime-water can be decanted and reused in the generator. Federal, state, and local legislation restrict the methods of storage and disposal of carbide lime hydrate and it has become increasingly important to find consumers for the by-product. The thickened hydrated lime is marketed for industrial wastewater treatment, neutrali2ation of spent pickling acids, as a soil conditioner in road constmction, and in the production of sand-lime bricks. 

Potassium iodate [7758-05-6] KIO, mol wt 214.02, 59.30% I, forms white, odorless crystals or a crystalline powder. It has a density 3.98 g/mL and mp of 560°C with partial decomposition. Potassium iodate is rapidly formed when potassium iodide is fused with potassium chlorate, bromate, or perchlorate. The solubihty in water is 9.16 g/100 g H2O at 25°C and 32.2 g/100 g H2O at 100°C. KIO is extensively used as an oxidizing agent in analytical chemistry and as amaturing agent and dough conditioner (see Bakery processes and leavening agents).

Tricalcium Phosphate. Commercial tricalcium phosphate (TCP) is actually an amorphous basic calcium phosphate close to hydroxyapatite in composition. Because of its extremely low solubiUty in water, TCP is precipitated almost quantitatively from dilute phosphate solutions with a slurry of hydrated lime. TCP is separated by dmm-, spray-, or flash-drying the TCP slurry, with or without intermediate sedimentation or filtration steps. It is used as an industrial-grade flow conditioner and parting agent.
