Pulp exiting the conditioners is diluted by usiag process brine to a soHds content of 30—35 wt % for use as feed for the flotation cells. In some plants, the coarse- and fine-fraction flows are floated separately. In most plants, the two fractions are recombiaed and the flotation is conducted ia a common operation. 

Cationic surfactants have applications such as inhibiting the growth of bacteria, inhibiting corrosion, separating phosphate ore from silica and potassium chloride from sodium chloride (flotation agents), and they serve well as fabric softeners, antistatic agents, and hair conditioners. 

The action of a collector may be altered by the presence of secondary additives known as modifiers or conditioners. One that promotes collection is called an activator, and one that inhibits it is called a depressor or depressant. The pH of the pulp can be an important factor, and acids or alkalies are often added to bring the pH to the best level for the particular collector being used. Collectors and conditioners together can be regarded as one class of flotation agents whose function is to modify a mineral surface so that it will attach itself to an air bubble.

It is common practice to add the etheramines, which are partly neutralised (5-30%) with acetic acid, direct to the mineral slurry. As in all flotation operations, the collector is sensitive to slime in iron ore applications, and in particular for haematite, a lot of fine material is produced during the grinding process. The presence of slime will increase the collector consumption drastically, and give poor silica reduction and decrease the iron recovery. Therefore, a de-sliming stage is often used prior to flotation. In this, the iron oxide particles are depressed with starch or dextrin alkalized com starch is also commonly used. The depressant is added in a conditioner formulation before the collector is added. The pH varies between 8 to 10.5 in haematite flotation, with 10.5 being the common pH used, while magnetite flotation often takes place at pH levels of 8 to 10.
