Perfume fabric conditioner

C8H16O2, Mr 144.22, df 0.860-0.870, nf 1.401-1.407, a colorless liquid with a fruity-apple odor. It is used to create fruity top notes in perfumes for many purposes, e.g., for shampoos, fabric conditioners, detergents, air fresheners, and... 

Worldwide production amounts to some lOOt/yr. Patchouli oil is very tenacious and is used in perfumery for oriental and masculine notes. It is used to a large extent in fabric conditioner perfumes due to its high substantivity. FCT 1982 (20) p.291 [8014-09-3], [84238-39-1],... 

Anais Anais is another perfume that has been widely adapted for use in many types of functional product including soaps and fabric conditioners. Many of its components such as the salicylates, musks, woody notes, and aldehyde C14 are among the most substantive to cloth, while the floral notes are ideally suited to bring a natural and gentle quality to such products. 

Substantivity refers to the ability of a perfume or a perfume material, applied in a diluted dispersion in water, to attach itself to a solid surface such as the skin (in the case of toilet soap and bath and shower products), the hair (in shampoos and conditioners), or textile fibers (in detergents and fabric softeners). It may refer also to their ability to stay on the surface when this is moistened (as in deodorants or water-proof sun protection products). 

Attraction also occurs between the paper of the smelling blotter and the perfume materials. The attraction forces between the perfume and the solid support upon which it has been deposited are called forces of adhesion, and the degree of adhesion is often designated by the term substantivity. Adhesion plays a major role in the persistence of perfume on the skin, of the perfume from shampoos or conditioners on the hair, of detergent and fabric softener perfumes on textile fibers. 

Association, due to polarization and hydrogen bonding, is of special significance to perfumers when it comes to the fixation of perfumes, and in the formulation of perfumes for such products as fabric detergents and conditioners where substantivity is a major requirement. The polar characteristics of perfumery materials are also of importance for their separation by gas chromatography when using certain types of column.

Perfumes can be used in different types of products (Figure 1) such as cosmetics and toiletries (fine fragrances, shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, shaving creams, makeup, baby care products, deodorants, soaps, feminine products, etc.) and household products (cleaners, air fresheners, bleaches, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, etc.). 

The formulation class (tooth paste, shampoo, fabric softener, etc.) provides basic information about the components present. Standard shampoo formulations contain two types of surfactants (either two anionic or one anionic and one amphoteric surfactant) foam booster (nonionic surfactant) conditioner, viscosity improver, opacifier, dye, perfume, chelate, and preservatives. Normally, formulated products are available as liquid, solid, emulsion, dispersion, etc, with a great number of components (in some cosmetic products there may be 20 components) and some of them, such as the preservatives, are found at low concentrations.
