Every safety approach listed in Figure 1.2 requires that you consider the human element or the psychology of safety. Indeed, the most successful approaches, behavior-based safety and comprehensive ergonomics, directly address the human aspects of safety. The bottom line is illustrated in Figure 1.3. The three employees here are looking at a contributing factor in almost every injury—the human factor. TTius, any safety intervention that improves the safety-related behaviors of workers will prevent workplace injuries. 

The behavior-based approach targets human behavior and relies on interpersonal observation and feedback for intervention. The success of comprehensive ergonomics depends on employees observing relationships between behaviors and work situations.

BCSP is an examination and certifying body. Candidates who pass a Safety Fundamentals Examination receive the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) title those who pass the Comprehensive Practice Examination receive the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) title. Also, BCSP gives specialty examinations in subjects such as system safety and ergonomics.

The plant layout must be comprehensively reviewed - this can be incorporated in the Hazop - to ensure that the design is ergonomically friendly and that adequate escape routes are provided.

Occupational health and safety professionals are service workers who either provide preventive services or support occupational health and safety programs. Each member of the interdisciplinary team contributes to the occupational health and safety program based on his or her skills and training. Some team members provide direct services to the workers, and others provide support services to the comprehensive occupational heath and safety program. Examples of applications of occupational health and safety include biomechanics, ergonomics, and occupational health psychology. 

Rapid comprehension of symbols within the vehicle can be even more critical than comprehension of road signs because extracting that information also involves moving the eyes away from the road. Thus, slow comprehension of and long fixations on in-vehicle symbols can contribute to driver distraction (see Chapter 13). To minimize that possibility it is important to design symbols that meet the ergonomic principles stated above, and then assess not only the comprehension of the symbols but also the time needed to respond to them.

For ergonomic design of new system components, these have to be adapted to the abilities and skills of people [62, p. 969]. Therefore, this section shows the state of research regarding information acquisition and processing based on established model approaches. To fulfill the task of driving the visual sensory channel is by far the most comprehensive [1, p. 6], [76, p. 1]. The design and study relevant characteristics of the human eye are therefore summarized briefly. This is followed by consideration of the vision task and the related vision restrictions from commercial vehicles. 

Secretary Chao unveils a comprehensive plan designed to reduce ergonomic injuries through a combination of industry-specific guidelines, strong enforcement, outreach and assistance, and further research. 

Although the above initiatives provided a comprehensive coverage of the ergonomics recommendations appropriate to each family of equipment covered, within the wider mining context the range of equipment families covered is limited (for example, the principle was not applied to any surface mining equipment). In addition, it is likely that there is scope for updating the work done to ensure it is as applicable and comprehensive at the start of the twenty-first century as it was at the end of the twentieth. 

A comprehensive checklist developed by OSHA has been included in this chapter. Figure 13-2 offers a two-page evaluation form for office ergonomics.
