Inadequate ergonomic design in areas such as control panels and the labeling and placement of valves on the plant can also be regarded as a latent failure because it will increase the probability of active errors. For example, a worker may misread process information from a poorly designed display. Poorly labeled and situated valves can cause the wrong valve to be selected, with possibly disastrous consequences. [Pg.41]

Figures 1-2, A and B illustrate two types of adjustable micropipetting devices that also demonstrate unique ergonomic design features. These devices are programmable and can be used for dispensing aliquots of liquid into multiple wells at the same time. In practice, using disposable plastic tips, they allow simultaneous aspiration and delivery of solutions to multiple sample micro weEs. Each channel is piston driven to allow the user to pipette with as few or as many tips as necessary. Aliquots of liquid as smaE as 0.2pL can be dispensed at three different aspiration or dispense rates. The HiTOPS device was recently used in the synthesis of combinatorial libraries of dike-topiperazines [61] for the development of highly selective inhibitors of collagenase-1. The HiTOPS system is easy to use, has an ergonomic design, and allows the use of up to 50 mg of a resin per well. The other advantage of this method is the commercial availability of the described devices. Affymax has licensed its technology to Whatman/Polyfiltronics, which manufactures the HiTOPS System. [Pg.62]

The most ergonomic design of a 96-well based device for parallel synthesis of organic compounds was introduced by Affymax Research Institute their HiTOPS system is described in section 3.4.3.1 of this chapter. [Pg.72]

There are many guidelines, tables, and computer-aided tools for the ergonomic design of workstations. The methodology of planning and realizing a manual workstation is shown in Figure 21. [Pg.417]

The lifting index (LI) provides a relative estimate of the physical stress associated with a manual lifting job and is equal to the load weight divided by the RWL. According to Waters et al. (1994), the RWL and LI can be used to guide ergonomic design in several ways ... [Pg.1079]

Concepts such as user-centered design, user-friendly systems, and ergonomically designed systems have been around for quite some time. Virtually everybody endorses these ideas, but very few people know what to do in order to realize the potential of these concepts. What is needed, and what this chapter presents, is a methodological framework within which human-centered design objectives can be systematically and naturally pursued. [Pg.1298]
