Coating protection

Acrolein is highly toxic by skin absorption. Brief contact may result in the absorption of harmful and possibly fatal amounts of material. Skin contact causes severe local irritation and chemical bums. Poly(vinyl chloride) coated protective gloves should be used (99). [Pg.128]

Tanl . Coatings for Hquid cargo tanks ate selected according to the materials that the tanks (qv) ate to contain. Tank coatings protect the cargo from contamination and must be compatible with the material carried. Epoxy systems ate most frequendy selected because they perform well with both aqueous and organic products. A carefully appHed three-coat epoxy system having a dry-film thickness of 225—300 pm can be expected to last for 12 years. [Pg.367]

A surface coating protects the substrate against abrasion, moisture, light, and corrosion. The binder for the pigment and extenders is fluid before application and rigid soon after. Natural binders range from gum arable to fish oil. The first varnishes were solutions of natural resins, having transparency, hardness, amorphous structure, and little permanence. [Pg.285]

In some cases, the oxide-coating protects the surface from further oxide buildup. One example is that of aluminum where an oxide coating appears almost instantaneously once the pristine surface is exposed to air. Yet, there are many cases where the oxide layer continues to buildup until the metal is totally consumed (One example is that of iron and "rust"). How is this possible Wagner hypothesized that both metal and oxide ions difiosed through the metal oxide layer so as to build up the layer thickness from both sides. The following diagram is one representation of such a mechanism ... [Pg.147]

Coatings. The use of photopolymer materials for the preparation of curable coatings is highly diverse. Many of the products used at home and at work have been coated with a photopolymer material for protective and decorative applications. Just a few of the many applications of photopolymer technology include UV curable pigmented (94) and clear (95-96) protective coatings, protective furniture (97) and... [Pg.10]

With careful selection of the combination of starting alkoxides and appropriate synthesis conditions, silica-based sol-gel technology is now widely applied to the conservation of art objects and cultural heritage. For example, a hybrid sol-gel coating protects the fourteenth-century... [Pg.104]

Anomalous cases were noted in which this generalization did not hold. These very empirical measurements were followed by more thorough studies (IS). Thin paint films with very low electrical resistance show active corrosion potentials which become more positive as the paint film was increased in thickness. Shapes of the potential/time curves were misleading as a guide to ultimate coating protective properties. [Pg.49]

An epoxy resin formulation completely free of organic solvent was applied to carbon steel coupons using supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) as the volatile solvent. Sleet coupons coated in this manner were compared to coupons coated with a standard military specification marine primer (MlL-P-24441) during exposure to aerated 0.5 nrl sodium chloride (NaCl). The solvent-free coating protected the steel from corrosion in this environment as well, if not better than, the solvent-based primer (Kendig et al., 1999). [Pg.246]

Candelilla wax or cerote is a scaly coating on the stems and leaves of some members of the genus Euphorbia that grow in the hot, dry Chihuahuan desert of northern Mexico and the southwestern USA. The waxy coating protects the plant from dehydration in the fierce sun and wind. To remove the wax, the entire plant is boiled in water, with mild sulfuric acid added. The wax is skimmed from the surface of the liquid and dried. [Pg.89]
