In spite of vast research work on PUD-acrylic hybrids, a limited range of hybrids is currently available. Among the various systems, two types are of interest to the construction industry. The first type is suitable for concrete protection, in the form of coatings. The second type finds suitability for wood finishes for parquet floor lacquers. 

When appropriate materials are properly applied, coatings and sealers can effectively protect the concrete substrate. Decisions regarding the materials used to coat concrete substrates should be influenced by the chemicals which will be stored, and how particular coating materials react with those chemicals in accidental spill conditions. Also important in the process is the tendency of the particular concrete substrate chosen to shrink and crack. 

Surface treatments are applied to new structures as a preventative measure, to existing structures where the need for future protection is anticipated, and to repaired structures in order to improve the service life of the repairs (as well as to mask the visible effect of repairs). Of the many types of surface treatment of concrete, only those aimed at providing protection against corrosion of reinforcement will be mentioned here. This places coatings for protection against chemical attack outside the present scope.

Corrosion is the effect of unwanted chemical reactions on the structures and properties of metals and alloys. For engineers out in the field, corrosion means delays and production problems. Corrosion can be further defined as the deterioration of any material in contact with its surroundings. Therefore, engineers will not only have to deal with corrosion of metals but also to corrosion of plastics, wood, concrete, protective coatings, and roofing.

The ISAT test (BS 1881-208 1996) is particularly useful for checking the effectiveness of coatings. Concrete Society Technical Report 50 is a Guide to surface treatments for protection and enhancement of concrete (Concrete Society, 1997a). Rilem Report 12 (Kropp and Hilsdorf, 1995) goes into great detail on the various tests and transport phenomena in concrete.
