In 1933, the first roU coater was installed as an integral part of a paper machine. These on-machine coaters produce a low cost coated paper used largely for magazines. Coating of paper off-machine at speeds greater than paper machine manufacturing speeds is possible with the use of the various available blade coaters (17). 

Fluid passage through a bent blade nip is driven by hydrodynamic force and thus depends on paper machine speed and viscosity. Non-uniform fluid pressure in the feed chamber and fluctuations of viscosity can lead to variations in coat weight.

In general, doctor blades are used for casting thicker tapes, that is, those that are 25 microns or thicker in the dried state. All ceramic substrate casting machines use a doctor blade of some sort. For these applications, the green tape thickness is usually on the order of 250 to 1000 pm (0.010 to 0.040 in.). Some of the machines produced in Japan use the "comma coating head for these thick tapes.
