Coatings, protective polymer

Capillary Columns Capillary, or open tubular columns are constructed from fused silica coated with a protective polymer. Columns may be up to 100 m in length with an internal diameter of approximately 150-300 )J,m (Figure 12.17). Larger bore columns of 530 )J,m, called megabore columns, also are available. 

Polymers can be used as surface coatings. Linear polymers are applied as a solution the solvent evaporates leaving a protective film of the polymer. Thermosets are applied as a fluid mixture of resin and hardener which has to be mixed just before it is used, and cures almost as soon as it is applied.

Coating organic polymer films with lecithin can improve the release properties of the film from the crimp jaws of the automated packaging machine (441). In analytical equipment, lecithin is used to improve the wettability of the contact surface, which enables the solvent to be presented uniformly for analysis (442). Incorporation of lecithin in a masking application can reduce bubble formation and improve the uniformity of the apphcation (443). And finally, lecithin can be used as a protective coating for a painted surface such as found on automobiles. Once applied, it facilitates the removal of insects and debris. The coating is resistant to rain and washing away (444). 

Complex drug mixtures contained within a single-dosage form may be prepared by coating the drugs onto different batches of sugar spheres with different protective polymer coatings. 

Use Solvent for natural and synthetic resins (particularly vinyls), in top-coating solutions, polymer coating, cellophane, protective coatings, adhesives, magnetic tapes, printing inks, etc. Grignard reactions, lithium aluminum hydride reductions, and polymerizations chemical intermediate and monomer. 

Major polymer applications surface protective coatings (protective and decorative - automotive, metal cans, industrial flooring, anticorrosive paints), electrical/elec-tronics (printed circuit panels, conductive adhesives), composites (building/construction, marine, electrical/electronics, aircraft, communication satellites, automotive, pipes, consumer products), bonding and adhesives, flooring, tooling and casting, biosensors... 

Electropolymerization methods are already established for two purposes—the coating of polymer films onto electrodes and the electroinitiation of bulk polymerization. Future prospects are probably brighter for the use of these processes in new coating technology, both for protection of metallic surfaces and for designed modification of electrodes in the manner discussed earlier. 

Solder masks (solder resists) are protective polymer coatings used on printed circuit boards (PCB s) to prevent solder bridging between conductors during soldering (1-3). The selective application of the solder mask limits the amount of conductor area in contact with the molten solder, minimizing solder usage and slowing the rate of conductor metal contamination in the solder pot.
