Primers for protective coatings may be divided into three broad classes based on the mechanism of substrate protection barrier primers that function by preventing the ingress of moisture and electrolytes, primers that protect the substrate galvanically in the presence of electrolytes, and primers that contain electrochemical inhibitors to passivate the substrate. Each of these approaches requires a distinct primer film structure due to the different mechanisms of protection. 

Today, Dr. Birss is a chemistry professor at the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on developing films to coat metal surfaces. Among other uses, these films can serve as protective barriers against corrosion, and as catalysts in fuel cells. 

The admixture may react with cement constituents to precipitate insoluble products, and these may form slightly permeable films or coatings on the cement grains, acting as protective barriers with respect to further hydration. 

Care should be taken to ensure that protective equipment is worn correctly, and that no exposed skin is visible gloves and laboratory coats are worn to ensure that dermal contact is minimized and to provide a continuous protective barrier to the skin from powder contact. Disposable sleeve covers are also suggested if arms are inserted far enough that laboratory coats could be covered with hazard. 

Sclera The sclera is the outermost firm coat of the eye that serves as a protective barrier for the sensitive inner parts. It is composed of the same type of collagen fibers as the corneal stroma. However, the fibers are arranged in an irregular network rather than a lattice pattern, which makes the tissue appear opaque compared to the transparent cornea. The white sclera constitutes the posterior five-sixths of the globe, whereas the transparent cornea comprises the anterior one-sixth [17],... 

The creation of a protective coat or boundary layer (with a hydrophilic colloid) about such particles offers the best protection to crystal growth. Because protective barriers may or may not flocculate, the substrate particles, the sign (positive or negative), and the charge potential on the particle surface (including a double layer) govern the choice between flocculation or dispersion (deflocculation).
