Protective and industrial coatings

Chromium makes up just 0.012% of the Earth s crust, yet it is an important industrial metal. The main use of chromium is in metal alloys. Stainless steel, for example, contains as much as 20% chromium. Nichrome, a 60 40 alloy of nickel and chromium, is used to make heat-radiating wires in electrical devices such as toasters and hair dryers. Another important application of chromium metal is as a protective and decorative coating for the surface of metal objects, as described in Chapter 19. 

The successful application of the sol-gel route has been realized in the International technological practice of many branches of the industries—electronics, optics, construction of engines, nuclear energetics, chemical, and food industry equipment. Among these materials are ferro-, piezo-, and dielectrics, solid electrolytes, refractory materials, membranes, protective and decorative coatings, and also films with special optical and electrophysical properties, like hightemperature superconductors. 

The objective of this chapter is to illustrate the use of microradiology with coherent x-rays [ 1 ] to investigate open problems in electrodeposition. In many applications, latexes are spread on substrates as coatings for protective purposes. In many latex applications (such as latex paints and industrial coatings), the formation of a cohesive film is the ultimate goal. In such cases, film formation takes place within several days. 

In the coatings manufacturing industry, methyl chloroform is used as a solvent in the formulation of protective and decorative coatings and as a thinner to reduce the viscosity of high-solid content coatings for spray application. The chemical also can be used in the production of rotogravure and flexographic inks. In addition to the above uses, methyl chloroform is used to dry clean leather and suede products and to clean motion picture film. 

Asphalt, shellac, and other naturally occurring resins have been used as protective and decorative coatings for centuries and were the major products of the polymer industry in the 1880s. Ready-mixed oleoresinous paints were available prior to the 1880s and accounted for 50% of commercial paints in the 1930s. 

These foams are used for board stock in commercial and industrial buildings as insulation for internal cavity and external walls, roof, floor, and foundations. Spray-appHed foam, covered subsequently with one of a variety of protective coatings, is widely used for large roofing appHcations and has limited use as external walls. Eor residential buildings, the principal use is as external sheathing board.
