The importance of polymer composites arises largely from the fact that such low density materials can have unusually high elastic modulus and tensile strength. Polymers have extensive applications in various fields of industry and agriculture. They are used as constructional materials or protective coatings. Exploitation of polymers is of special importance for products that may be exposed to the radiation or temperature, since the use of polymers make it possible to decrease the consumption of expensive (and, sometimes, deficient) metals and alloys, and to extent the lifetime of the whole product. [Pg.239]

Flame spray metallising is widely used for the protection of metal against corrosion, especially for in situ protection of stmctural members. The principal metal used for spraying of plastics is sine. Aluminum and copper are also used. If the distance from the part is too great, the zinc solidifies before it touches the part and adhesion is extremely poor. If the molten zinc oxidizes, conductivity and adhesion are poor. If the distance is too short, the zinc is too hot and the plastic warps or degrades. These coatings are not as dense as electrically deposited coatings because of numerous pores, oxide inclusions, and discontinuities where particles have incompletely coalesced. [Pg.135]

Because of the high functional values that polyimides can provide, a small-scale custom synthesis by users or toU producers is often economically viable despite high cost, especially for aerospace and microelectronic appHcations. Aircraft Sealants. Polysulfides have been used for sealing fuel tanks and aircraft stmctural components since the 1940s. There are stringent requirements for these sealants. They must have outstanding resistance to fuels and exceUent adhesion to many different materials such as various metal aUoys and protective coatings used in aircraft constmction. The sealants must also perform in extremely variable weather conditions (10). The polysulfides have an exceUent performance record. [Pg.458]
