Coating dibutyl sebacate

Plasticizers are used in the polymer industry to improve flexibility, workability, and general handling properties. Dibutyl sebacate and phthalates, such as dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, butylbenzyl phthalate, and diphenyl-2-ethylhexyl phosphate, serve widely as plasticizers in vinylidene chloride copolymers, nitrocellulose-coated regenerated cellulose film, and cellulose acetate (Castle et ah, 1988a). The verapamil pellets contained equal parts of verapamil hydrochloride (Fermion) and lactose (Ph. Eur.) plus 4% of gelatin as a binder. Dibutyl sebacate is used in oral pharmaceutical formulations as a plasticizer for film coatings on tablets, beads, and granules, at concentrations of 10-30% by weight of polymer. It is also used as a plasticizer in controlled-release tablets and microcapsule preparations. 

For spray coating, polymer solutions and dispersions should be diluted with suitable solvents. Some products need the addition of a plasticizer such as dibutyl sebacate, dibutyl phthalate, glyceryl triacetate, or polyethylene glycol. Different types of plasticizer may be mixed to optimize the polymer properties for special requirements. 

Surelease. a product of Colorcon. is produced by first melt extruding ethylcellulose with oleic acid and dibutyl sebacate (DBS) (or fractionated coconut oil) to form a molten plasticized polymeric blend. This molten blend of plasticized ethylcellulose is then introduced into an ammoniated water solution under high shear and pressure to disperse small droplets of plasticized ethylcellulose into the water phase (67). Ammonium oleate is produced in situ during this emulsification process to stabilize the colloidal ethylcellulose particles (67).
