Dicyclohexyl phthalate

One principal use of cyclohexanol has been in the manufacture of esters for use as plasticizers (qv), ie, cyclohexyl and dicyclohexyl phthalates. In the finishes industry, cyclohexanol is used as a solvent for lacquers, shellacs, and varnishes. Its low volatiUty helps to improve secondary flow and to prevent blushing. It also improves the miscibility of cellulose nitrate and resin solutions and helps maintain homogeneity during drying of lacquers. Reaction of cyclohexanol with ammonia produces cyclohexylamine [108-91-8], a corrosion inhibitor. Cyclohexanol is used as a stabilizer and homogenizer for soaps and synthetic detergent emulsions. It is used also by the textile industry as a dye solvent and kier-boiling assistant (see Dye carriers). [Pg.426]

Plasticizers are used in the polymer industry to improve flexibility, workability, and general handling properties. Dibutyl sebacate and phthalates, such as dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, butylbenzyl phthalate, and diphenyl-2-ethylhexyl phosphate, serve widely as plasticizers in vinylidene chloride copolymers, nitrocellulose-coated regenerated cellulose film, and cellulose acetate (Castle et ah, 1988a). Limited information was located regarding possible interactions of DEHP with other chemicals in humans. Urinary measurements of the monoester metabolites of seven common phthalates in 289 adults from the U.S. population, determined using the selective and sensitive analytical approach discussed in Section 3.8.1 (Biomarkers Used to Identify or Quantify Exposure to DEHP), showed detectable levels of monoethyl phthalate (95th percentile concentration, 3,750 ppb), monobutyl phthalate (294 ppb), monobenzyl phthalate (137 ppb), 2-ethylhexyl phthalate (21.5 ppb), cyclohexyl phthalate (8.6 ppb), isononyl phthalate (7.3 ppb), and octyl phthalate (2.3 ppb), reflecting exposure to DEHP, dibutyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, di-isononyl phthalate, and dioctyl phthalate, respectively (Blount et al. 2000a). Considering evidence such as this which indicates that co-exposure to multiple phthalates can occur, as well as the likelihood that many of these compounds exert effects via a common mechanism of action, there is a potential for interactions between DEHP and other phthalate esters. [Pg.163]

When applying the conventional food contact ratio the worst-case migration potential did not exceed the SML for any of the substances derived from plastics nor did the calculated worst-case exposure exceed the ADI/TDI or other exposure restriction value in any products. However, when the actual food contact ratio was applied the ADI/TDI or other exposure restriction value of several substances could theoretically be exceeded. The worst-case calculations assume that intimate contact is made with the entire surface of the packaging. This is not the case for the majority of snack foods that are solids or semi-solids and so the actual area of contact made will be less than the total area available for contact (e.g. crisps). The levels of those migrants (diisobutyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, diphenyl 2-ethylhexyl phosphate and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol) that had the potential to exceed the assigned restrictions, assuming 100% migration, were determined in foods. Of the five substances tested for, only one, dicyclohexyl phthalate, was detected in one of the foodstuffs (tortilla corn chips), at a concentration of 0.60 ppm. [Pg.422]

Figure 13 illustrates the elongation profile of the composition when three different plasticizers are used at increasing concentrations (37). Dioctyl adipate emerges from the antiplasticization area at relatively low concentrations and the elongation property builds steeply. The composition responds intermediately with increasing amounts of dioctyl phthalate, and dicyclohexyl phthalate is quite inefficient. When different plasticizers are substituted in a vinyl composition that must still maintain specific mechanical properties, the concentration of the substitutions must be adjusted to accommodate each particular plasticizer s "efficiency factor."... [Pg.626]

Plasticizers may be solvents or nonsolvents for nitrocellulose. The type used depends on the application. Nitrocellulose is for example soluble in dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, and triphenyl phosphate. Plasticizers in which nitrocellulose is insoluble include crude and blown vegetable oils, stearates, and oleates. [Pg.15]
