Technical criteria of plasticized PVC comprise the gelation behavior (measured as the temperature to fuse the plas-ticizer/PVC mixture), which varies between 80 and 180 °C depending on the plasticizer activity and the performance at high (processing) and low temperature. For example, adipate plasticizers allow use at lower temperatures than... [Pg.238]

In films for food packaging, only FDA-approved plasticizers can be used. Most often, an adipate plasticizer, usually di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEA), combined with epoxidized soybean oil is used. The oil epoxide is frequently termed a secondary plasticizer, because it is not used alone, and has heat-stabilizer properties in addition to plasticization effects. [Pg.178]

Adipate plasticizer n. For plasticizers derived from adipic acid. [Pg.29]

Alcohols of similar chain length to those used in phthalate manufacture can be esterified with adipic acid rather than phthalic anhydride to produce the family of adipate plasticizers. For example, esterification of 2-ethylhexanol with adipic acid yields di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DEHA), also known as dioctyl adipate (DOA). [Pg.5704]

In addition, the ideal plasticizer for PLA should be a low-volatility liquid, derived from green sources and biodegradable. The lactide monomer is obviously highly compatible but is too small a molecule, so it is easily lost from the system [11, 12]. Oligomeric lactic acid is also highly compatible, but the reduction in modulus is unacceptable. Awell-known green plasticizer is acetyl triethyl citrate. With HSP of (16.6, 3.5, 8.6), its distance from PLA is an unfortunately high 8. The other common citrates are no better the popular acetyl tributyl citrate has HSP of (16.7, 2.5, 7.4) and a distance of 8.4. It is no surprise, therefore, to find that a big problem with the citrates is their tendency to bleed out of the PLA. Similarly, triacetin (16.5,4.5,9.1) has a distance of 7.4. The common adipate plasticizers are also poorly compatible. [Pg.86]

In these compounds, different plasticizers may give improved low temperature properties, but many are likely to be leached out in hot oil. PPA (polypropylene adipate) plasticizers are retained, but confer flexibility only at normal temperatures. [Pg.107]

The analysis of these materials is even more critical with increased interest in their environmental impact on ecological systems and human health. A number of frequently used additives, such as phthalate and adipate plasticizers have been identified as environmental pollutants, and the fate of these chemicals is the subject of ongoing studies. Concern over the total composition of plastics has increased the focus on the total life cycle of polymeric materials. Government attention to toxic substances has increased over the years through the US Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and the REACH initiative in the EU. These regulations may prohibit or otherwise impact the exportability of the plastic goods or other products that come in contact with the plastics. This, coupled with increased consumer attention and disclosures of chemicals in consumer products, has increased the need for a more complete analysis of polymeric materials. Combustion of rubber... [Pg.662]
