Emulsion polymerization also has the advantages of good heat transfer and low viscosity, which follow from the presence of the aqueous phase. The resulting aqueous dispersion of polymer is called a latex. The polymer can be subsequently separated from the aqueous portion of the latex or the latter can be used directly in eventual appUcations. For example, in coatings applications-such as paints, paper coatings, floor pohshes-soft polymer particles coalesce into a continuous film with the evaporation of water after the latex has been applied to the substrate. 

Four major forms used fibers—swimsuits, foundation garments elastomers— industrial wheels, heel lifts coatings— floors where impact and abrasion resistance are required, bowling pins foams—pillows, cushions... 

Polyterpenes, coumarone-indene resins, and so-called petroleum resins are produced commercially using cationic polymerization. These are used as additives for rubber, coatings, floor coverings, and adhesives. 

Latex applications include adhesives, fibre binders (such as in paper and textiles), coatings (such as in paints, coated papers, coated fabrics, coated flooring, and coated insulation), dipping-produced goods (such as balloons, bladders, gloves, and tubing), solid foam products (such as for cushioned furniture), and as a constituent in building materials (such as mortars and concrete) [791].

Tlhis study was made to reconcile the behavior of low molecular weight hydrocarbon resins and the behavior of their plasticizers with the solubility parameter and with the Flory-Huggins treatment of phase separation from polymer solutions. Copolymers with all of the comonomers in Table VI have commercial value, but the copolymer containing vinyl acetate is the most important and is plasticized internally. Major uses include coatings, floor coverings, and phonograph records for which low melt viscosity, lower processing temperatures, freedom from external plasticizers, and solubility are required. Copolymerization with vinyl acetate reduces tensile strength, heat distortion temperature, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and heat stability. However, less heat stability is required because these copolymers can be processed at lower temperatures.
