Coating floor tile

Used to keep plastics soft and more flexible. This type of plastic can be used for medical tubing and blood storage bags, wire and cables, carpet back coating, floor tile, and adhesives. It is also used in cosmetics and pesticides. 

PVC is one of the most commonly used amorphous thermoplastics. It is available in two forms plasticised, used mainly in the wire coatings, floor tiles, toy balls, gloves, car seats, rain-wear and in vinyl gramophone-records, and unplasticised, used in pipes, gutters, window frames and wall claddings.

China clay or kmlin, which is predominantly kaolinite, is particularly valuable because it is essentially free from iron impurities (and therefore colourless). World production in 1991 was 24.7M1 (USA 39%, UK 13%, Colombia, Korea and USSR 7% each). In the USA over half of this vast tonnage is used for paper filling or paper coating and only 130000 tonnes was used for china, crockery, and earthenware, which is now usually made from ball clay, a particularly fine-grained, highly plastic material which is predominantly kaolinite together with clay-mica and quartz. Some 800000 tonnes of ball clay is used annually in the USA for white ware, table ware, wall and floor tiles, sanitary ware, and electrical porcelain. 

These are used to produce prepackaged products such as decorative wall coatings, ceramic tile adhesives, selfleveling floor overlays and patching mortars for concrete structures. On site, addition of the product manufacturers specified amount of water produces a material with the... 

The lower-boiling fraction of the neutral oil is a very powerful solvent, particularly for coatings containing coal tar and pitch. The material also is a source of unsaturated compounds, such as indene and, in a lesser amount, coumarone and homologues of these compounds. Resins are formed in situ from these compounds when solvent naphtha is treated with Friedel-Crafts type catalysts. See also Friedel-Crafts Reaction. These resins are useful in the manufacture of inexpensive floor tiles and coatings. The remaining solvent is recovered by distillation and used as a solvent. 

Fillers. Inert inorganic substances such as calcium carbonate, clay, silicates, and asbestos are often utilized in vinyl compositions where clarity is not a requirement. While the carbonates and clay are used ostensibly to reduce cost, beneficial results are forthcoming. The carbonates produce a dry, matte surface and are claimed, because of their alkaline nature, to benefit heat and light stability. Clay improves electrical insulation. Silicates enhance surface dryness. Asbestos fibers provide the reinforcement necessary for dimensional stability in floor tile. Antimony oxide, per se or as a surface coating on an inert carrier, provides flame retard-ance. Their only major adverse effects are to reduce tensile strength and elongation and require an increase in plasticizer level to compensate... 

Major uses for UV curing (room temperature) include use of flat stock-fillers in particle boards and hardwood flooring, and for high-gloss (no-wax) protective coatings for floor tiles, wood finishes, and other specialty uses. 

Coated substrates involve different materials such as coated credit cards, paper, woven and nonwoven textiles, plastic or aluminum films and sheets, and roll coverings. Calender lines can process one coated side, both sides, or laminated (multiple substrates coated between each substrate). Calender with three rolls is usually sufficient for one-sided coating. However four rolls are used for extremely thin coatings. The 4-roll calender can be used for double-sided coating that is applied simultaneously on both sides. Specialized calendering equipment is used for certain products such as credit cards, floor tiles, and window curtains.

Because of its superior flexibility and adhesion to many substrates, Uvimer 720 was considered a prime candidate for a floor tile coating. Table VII presents data on two formulations developed for this application. The primary consideration in this Instance was abrasion resistance, with resistance to curl running a close second. Both formulations showed good abrasion resistance, but the formula containing the Increased level of diluent was significantly better as shown by comparison of the results with the 1000 gram weight.
