Make certain that you look in Chemical Sources USA to see who makes what you might need. Chemical Sources USA also tells you which of these suppliers is the bulk producer. This handy book can be found in any science library (see also the Chemical Buyers Directory). 

MDL Screening Compounds Directory (formerly ACD-SC) contains over 3.5 million structures (including 3D models), comprising nearly 6 miUion products from 46 chemical suppliers of compounds for HTS. 

Symyx also runs the Available Chemicals Directory, launched originally by ACD Labs as a merged database of chemical supplier catalogues with structure search capability. The database provides access to over 1 million commercially available chemical compounds. The original concept has been extensively developed with the addition of other freely available software packages.

For chemical reaction literature, chemists use the SYNLIB database from Distributed Chemical Graphics. SYNLIB is a well-documented, user-friendly system, designed for end user browsing. Figure 6 shows sample SYNLIB printed output, two records to the page. For chemical supplier information, the Fine Chemicals Directory from Fraser Williams (Scientific Systems) Ltd. is available through MACCS, as is an internally developed database of chemicals available in our Chemical Stockroom. 

ChemExper ChemExper is a company that joins together the areas of chemistry, computer science, and telecoimnunication. The ChemExper Chemical Directory is a free service that allows finding a chemical by its molecular formula, lUPAC name, common name, CAS niunber, catalog number, substracture or physical characteristics, as well as chemical suppliers. This database contains currently more than 500,000 chemicals, 16,000 material safety data sheet (MSDS), 10,000 infrared (IR) spectra, and more than 500 chemical suppliers. 

The most complete listing of chemicals in commerce is Chem Sources published annually by the Directories Publishing Company, Flemington, New Jersey. This volume lists by name all commercially available chemicals with addresses of suppliers.

There exist a multitude of chemical reagent sources. The Available Chemical Directory (ACD) collection, from Symyx Technologies Inc., lists as many as 1,160,000 unique chemicals with chemical structure, pricing, supplier, purity, forms, etc. 

A great deal of price data is available online from suppliers websites that can be found through directory sites such as www.purchasing.com and www.business.com/ directory/chemicals. 

The ChemExper Chemical Directory (http //www.chemex-per.com/) is also listed below as a resource for searching available chemicals from various supplier catalogs. Links are provided to the supplier s web site and to MSDS. Only the basic properties are directly provided density, m.p., b.p., and flash point. However, links to the full text of the MSDS will usually provide some additional properties. 

A directory of Danish exporters (14) gives a list of Danish products with names and addresses of suppliers. This gives reasonably good coverage of products including a few in the chemical field. There is an index of products in English. 

A general directory of Finnish suppliers 19) has been issued in several languages, including English. About 40 chemicals are given in the classified list of products. The quarterly Finnish Trade Review 20) contains articles on industry, trade, and other matters affecting the Finnish economy, with a few statistics and news items. This is published in Enghsh. 

A directory of the French chemical industry 24) gives alphabetical lists of suppliers and products. There is no discrimination between manufacturers and merchants. A French newspaper 25) includes news items on developments in industries, markets, and individual companies in France, with valuable coverage, also, for other countries. Short articles on general developments of an economic and commercial nature, which are useful in throwing light on current trends, are also included. 

A general directory of commodity suppliers 32) lists products alphabetically and gives names of suppliers but does not discriminate between manufacturers and merchants. The list is inadequate for chemicals. The Handbuch der Deutschen Aktiengesell-schaften, a directory of German companies, gives detailed information on the finances, directorates, and industrial and other activities of the individual concerns. This is in five large volumes 33). 

There is a directory of Italian chemical manufacturers 1 9) arranged with alphabetical lists of companies and of products and their suppliers. 

A general directory of Norwegian exporters and export products 63) has classified lists of commodities with names and addresses of suppliers (manufacturers and merchants). Coverage of chemical products is moderate. Individual products are indexed in English. 

Fortunately, the majority of known microorganisms are classified as non-patho-genic and harmless to humans and the environment. These can be handled safely in the normal laboratory. Strains with desirable properties identified from the literature can often be ordered from catalogues of culture collections, just like chemicals from a supplier. There may be more than one strain of a given species listed in the catalogues as there are many John Brown found in a telephone directory. It is... 

The names and addresses of suppliers can be located by reference to Chemical Week Buyers Guide, Thomas Register, Conover-Mast Purchasing Directory, and other similar guides. 

C. SECTION III is a directory of chemical manufacturers and suppliers whose products are described in the Book. The entries are in alphabetical order by company name. Wherever possible, the postal address, telephone number, fax number and website address are provided.

Chem Sources. Flemington, N.J. Directories Publishing Co. This annual covers the more than 30,000 organic compounds sold by over 600 companies. It does not give price information, however, and thus it is still desirable to have the catalogs of some of the major suppliers, e.g., Aldrich Chemical Co., Milwaukee, Wis. 53210 Alfa Inorganics Inc., Beverly, Mass. 

The Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (London), publishes a Directory of Members, while the British and Overseas Pharmacist s Year Book (London, British and Colonial Druggist Ltd.) provides an alphabetical list of manufacturers and gives information on schools of pharmacy in many countries and institutions. The Chemist and Druggist Diary and Yearbook (Morgan) lists pharmaceutical suppliers, has a trade names index and also provides information on societies and institutions. The Pharmaceutical Society publishes annually an Index of New Products which gives the names and addresses of manufacturers with some technical information, while similar data with a list of trade names is given in the London Medical Handbook (British and Colonial Druggist Ltd.). Manufacturers are also listed alphabetically in the Proprietary Articles Trade Association Yearbook, and in the Retail Chemist Trade Price List of Proprietary Articles (London, Drury Press) which contains a list of trade names. British Chemical Plant (British Chemical Plant Manufacturers Association) lists its members. 

The.se databases have an important role to fill from a supply point of view, and mention should be made of the MDL Available Chemicals Directory (ACD), which coordinates the offerings of many suppliers. Containing over 240 catalogs representing over 500000 products and 2(X)000 substances, the ACD provides an efficient way to reliably source and comparison-shop for commercially available chemicals. The database contains all of the necessary information to select a vendor s product on the basis of a review of the purity, grade, and quantity desired, and then to place an order with the manufacturer or a local distributor. 

Sources for monomers and additives MDL s Available Chemicals Directory combines supplier data on over 240 000 compounds, many of which can be used as monomers and additives. Scientists can search by precise structural features, and find commercially available candidates.
