Charge effects

The well-known DLVO theory of coUoid stabiUty (10) attributes the state of flocculation to the balance between the van der Waals attractive forces and the repulsive electric double-layer forces at the Hquid—soHd interface. The potential at the double layer, called the zeta potential, is measured indirectly by electrophoretic mobiUty or streaming potential. The bridging flocculation by which polymer molecules are adsorbed on more than one particle results from charge effects, van der Waals forces, or hydrogen bonding (see Colloids). [Pg.318]

Charged particles Particles that have a positive or negative electrical charge. The nature of this charge effects the collection of the particles in a precipitator. [Pg.1421]

Polaron kinetics is also unaffected by variations in the applied voltage, as shown in Figure 8-I4b. The inset of Figure 8- 14b shows CPG efficiency as a function of the applied electric field. Symmetry with respect to the LED bias voltage rules out space charge effects and cxeiton-carrier interactions. In addition, we note that (A7/T),vi, has a quadratic dependence on the electric field, similarly to... [Pg.454]

Munroe, Charles Edward (1849—1938). Leader in the development of expls in the USA. Inventor of the first American smokeless powder, Indurite (qv), and discoverer of the Munroe Effect (See Detonation, Munroe-Neumann Effect (Or Shaped Charge Effect) in Vol 4, D442-R to D454-L). Professor of chemistry at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md, 1874—1886 chemist at the Naval Torpedo Station and Naval War College, Newport, RJ, 1886—1892 professor of chemistry at George Washington University, 1892—1917 and chief expls chemist of the US Bureau of Mines, 1919—1933. Author and co-author of numerous publications on expls Refs 1) H,W. Wiley, 1EC 15, 648-9 (1923)... [Pg.179]

Capacitance data for various crystal faces are available for Bi and Sb.28 As a broad trend, the faces with more negative values of Eam0 show higher values of C. Although this is qualitatively in line with the behavior of real Ag surfaces, the response of Bi and Sb is complicated by their semimetal nature, which gives rise to space-charge effects. For this reason it is not straightforward to compare the absolute values of C and their crystal face sequences with those of metals. [Pg.182]
