Charge-balancing effect

The pyrochlore structure is three-dimensional framework of corner-shared (Ti,Ta,Nb)06 octahedra. The A site lies within this framework and is 8-coordinated. The octahedra can articulate to allow for a fair range in sizes of the A cation, which accounts for the variable compositions of most of these compounds. Part of the structure is depicted in Fig. 5. The A coordination is a distorted cube, the size and degree of distortion depending on the amount of tipping of the B octahedra. Many pyrochlores show deviations from the/42 206(0,OH,F) stoichiometry, some of which are probably defect structures that result from charge balance effects and coupled substi-... [Pg.48]

Supported palladium oxide is the most effective catalyst used in total methane oxidation and in catalytic oxidation of VOCs [1-5]. However, the activity of the conventional catalysts is not sufficient [5-6]. Recently, the Pd-zeolite catalysts have attracted considerable attention due to their high and stable CH4 conversion efficiency [4-8]. In this work, the effect of the preparation method, the nature of the charge-balancing cations, the palladium loading and the pre-treatment gas nature on the texture, structure and catalytic activity of the Pd-ZSM-5 solids are investigated. [Pg.409]

This relation is useful because it effectively removes the requirement that Mj be known for one of the basis species. Instead of setting this value directly, it can be determined by balance from the mole numbers of the other basis species. When charged species appear in the basis, in fact, it is customary for equilibrium models to force charge balance by adjusting Mi for a component chosen either by the modeler or the computer program. [Pg.46]

Additionally, the B metal ions can adopt different oxidation states, but maintaining the proper average oxidation state to effect charge balance. That could increase the total number of possibilities for new compositions to very large numbers, even when limited to the oxide... [Pg.86]

In reactions with undissolved substrates or products, the pH of the reaction mixture exerts an important influence on the rate of enzymatic reactions. In these systems, the concentration of the species is maximal and reaches the solubility value. Therefore, in the presence of ionized suspended substrates or products, the pH can be derived from a charge balance of the species present in the reaction mixture. The presence of any additional aqueous buffer will then not have a significant effect [9]. [Pg.284]

The ATPase has an absolute requirement for Mg2+ which is essential for the breakdown of the phosphorylated intermediate. There is evidence for at least three forms of the phosphoenzyme, only the last of which is sensitive to Mg2+.144 Monovalent cations are effective as activators in the sequence K+ Tl+ > Na+ > NH4+ > Rb+ Cs4 > Li1, again through the promotion of the loss of phosphate from the phosphorylated intermediate.145 It has been postulated that K+ may be involved in antiport with Ca2+ to maintain charge balance, but it is currently thought that this involves protons or a flux of anions. [Pg.566]
