Decubitus ulcer (e.g. bed sores, pressure sores) Diabetic ulcers Varicose ulcers Rodent ulcers Peptic ulcers Ulcer due to continuous pressure exerted on a particular area of skin often associated with bed-ridden patients Ulcers (e.g. diabetic leg ) caused by complications of diabetes Due to defective circulation, sometimes associated with varicose veins An ulcerous cancer (basal cell carcinoma), usually affecting the face Ulcer of the digestive tract, caused by digestion of the mucosa by acid and pepsin may occur in e.g. the duodenum (duodenal ulcer), or the stomach (gastric ulcer)... [Pg.279]

Finally, recent research has indicated that other human diseases, such as the commonest form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, are caused by mutations in genes involved in the Sonic hedgehog signalling pathway. The Patched (Ptc) gene encodes a Sonic hedgehog receptor [92,93] and a tumor suppressor protein that is defective in basal cell nevus syndrome [94]. [Pg.585]

RRM, relative risk for melanoma BCC, basal cell carcinoma NMSC, nonmelanoma skin cancer MM, malignant melanoma. [Pg.1427]

It is important to state that not all malignant tumors give rise to metastases. Basal cell carcinoma of the skin, while capable of local invasion, rarely produces secondary growths. However, most other cancers give rise to metastases at some... [Pg.136]

Among a small factory population, two cases of lung cancer were found in men primarily involved in the production of benzoyl peroxide, but they were also exposed to benzoyl chloride and benzotrichloride. Benzoyl peroxide exposure was associated with a greater frequency of malignant melanoma in one of two case control studies it was not associated with basal cell carcinomas of the skin in another study. The lARC has determined that there is limited evidence for the carcinogenicity of benzoyl peroxide in experimental animals and that it is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. [Pg.79]

Fluorouracil is used in several combination regimens in the treatment of breast cancer. It also has palliative activity in gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas, including those originating in the stomach, pancreas, liver, colon, and rectum. Other tumors in which some antitumor effects have been reported include carcinomas of the ovary, cervix, oropharynx, bladder, and prostate. Topical 5-fluorouracil cream has been useful in the treatment of premalignant keratoses of the skin and superficial basal cell carcinomas, but it should not be used in invasive skin cancer. [Pg.646]

Jackson and Adams studied 33 cases of extensive basal cell carcinoma, two of which involved mustard-gas burns sustained during World War I. One of those developed 35 yr after the burn, but 2 yr after irradiation with cobalt-60. In the other, basal cell carcinoma developed at the site of three separate burns, 3 yr after exposure. Some of the mustard burns did not lead to basal cell cancer. [Pg.108]

There is now sufficient epidemiological evidence to classify arsenic as a human carcinogen and a cause of skin cancer. In people chronically exposed to toxic doses of arsenic, such cancers may be preceded by discolored skin (hyperpigmentation) and development of homy skin surfaces (hyperkeratosis). These areas may progress to locally invasive basal cell carcinomas or to squamous cell carcinomas capable of metastasis. Unlike skin cancers that develop on skin exposed to ultraviolet solar radiation, arsenic-induced skin cancer frequently develops in areas not commonly exposed to sunlight, such as the palms of hands or soles of feet. [Pg.241]

An increase in /3-catenin production has been noted in individuals with basal cell carcinoma. /3-catenin is known to play an important role in various aspects of liver biology, including hver development (both embryonic and postnatal), liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy, and the pathogenesis of hver cancer. [Pg.182]

More than 2,000 children who were irradiated for ringworm at New York University Medical Center over 20 years (age range 1-15 years) were compared to 1,380 control children. An additional 11,000 children (mean ages 7 to 8 years) irradiated for ringworm in Israel were also compared to control children. Significant increases in skin cancer, cancer of the scalp, and thyroid malignancies were noted. Risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin was highest at 0.32 per Gy (100 rads). Total incidence was 0.01 per Gy for males and 0.04 per Gy for females. Total mortality from all sites was 10% of the incidence (0.001 for males 0.004 for females). [Pg.388]

From 1905 to 1960, X-ray irradiation of the scalp for treating ringworm, T. capitis, was regularly performed on as many as 200000 children worldwide. For a typical series of X-ray treatments, doses of 220-540 rad were received by the scalp, 140 rad to the brain, 380 rad to the cranial marrow, and <100 rad to other organs and tissues of the head and neck. Cancers of the thyroid and skin (basal cell carcinoma) were the major consequences of irradiation. [Pg.2196]

Carcinogenesis. Skin cancer is the most serious adverse effect of UVR. There are three common types of skin cancer melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BSC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). BSC and SCC are known collectively as non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). BSC is the most common skin... [Pg.465]
