Calcium preparations available

Calcium preparations are often administered to ensure that adequate calcium levels are available in the body for various physiologic needs, including bone formation. Specifically, calcium supplements can be used to help prevent bone loss in conditions such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, and hypoparathyroidism. Gadolinium is found in several other minerals, including monazite and bastnasite, both of which are commercially important. With the development of ion-exchange and solvent extraction techniques, the availability and prices of gadolinium and the other rare-earth metals have greatly improved. The metal can be prepared by the reduction of the anhydrous fluoride with metallic calcium. [Pg.187]

Brine Preparation. Sodium chloride solutions are occasionally available naturally but they are more often obtained by solution mining of salt deposits. Raw, near-saturated brines containing low concentrations of impurities such as magnesium and calcium salts, are purified to prevent scaling of processing equipment and contamination of the product. Some brines also contain significant amounts of sulfates (see Chemicals FROMBRINe). Brine is usually purified by a lime—soda treatment where the magnesium is precipitated with milk of lime (Ca(OH)2) and the calcium precipitated with soda ash. After separation from the precipitated impurities, the brine is sent to the ammonia absorbers. [Pg.523]

Tofu. Tofu is prepared by adding a coagulant such as calcium sulfate to soymilk to precipitate the protein and oil into a gelatinous curd. The curd is then separated from the soluble portion (whey), pressed, and washed to yield a market-ready product. Tofu, a traditional food in Japan (90), was populari2ed in the United States in the late 1970s and is available in many U.S. supermarkets. [Pg.304]

Calcitonin. Calcitonin is available commercially from pork and salmon extracts (Calcimar, Armour) as well as by synthesis. Preparations are bioassayed on the basis of their calcium-lowering activity in comparison to the potency of pure pork calcitonin of which ca 4 p.g is equivalent to 1 MRC unit (Medical Research Council, U.K.). For clinical use, vials containing 400 units in 4 mL are available. The recommended daily dosage is 100 units to be adrninistered subcutaneously or intramuscularly because its plasma half-life is short (4—12 min). [Pg.54]

Other. Insoluble alkaline-earth metal and heavy metal stannates are prepared by the metathetic reaction of a soluble salt of the metal with a soluble alkah—metal stannate. They are used as additives to ceramic dielectric bodies (32). The use of bismuth stannate [12777-45-6] Bi2(Sn02)3 5H20, with barium titanate produces a ceramic capacitor body of uniform dielectric constant over a substantial temperature range (33). Ceramic and dielectric properties of individual stannates are given in Reference 34. Bleach Liquor. Bleach Hquor or lime bleach Hquor is an aqueous solution of calcium hypochlorite and calcium chloride. It typically contains 30—35 g/L of available chlorine, though it may be as high as 85 g/L. It has been used in pulp bleaching, when it can be made more cheaply than sodium hypochlorite. It is prepared on site by chlorinating lime solutions. [Pg.143]

One such decontaminant is supertropical bleach (STB). STB is a mixture of chlorinated lime and calcium oxide containing about 30% available chlorine. It can be used either as a dry mix or as a slurry to decontaminate some equipment surfaces and terrain. The dry mix is prepared with two parts bleach to three parts earth by volume. A slurry typically consists of 40 parts STB to 60 parts by weight of water. This material is then sprayed or swabbed on the contaminated surface (see Bleaching agents). STB is an effective decontaminant for mustard, lewisite, and VX. It is less effective against nerve agents other than VX. [Pg.404]

Calcium Oxide. Also called lime or quicklime (4,5), calcium oxide [1305-78-8] (Class 1, nonregenerative), is relatively iaexpensive. It is prepared by roasting calcium carbonate (limestone) and is available ia a soft and a hard form according to the way ia which it was burned. For desiccant service, soft-burned lime should always be used. Calcium oxide is most commonly used to dehydrate Hquids and is most efficient when it can be heated to speed the reaction rate. The reaction product is calcium hydroxide, which cmmbles as it picks up moisture. [Pg.507]

Calcium sulfate (anhydrous). (Prepared by heating the dihydrate or the hemihydrate in an oven at 235° for 2-3h it can be regenerated.) Available commercially as Drierite. It forms the hemihydrate, 2CaS04.H20, so that its capacity is fairly low (6.6% of its weight of water), and hence is best used on partially dried substances. It is very efficient (being comparable with phosphorus pentoxide and concentrated sulfuric acid). Suitable for most organic compounds. Solvents boiling below 100° can be dried by direct distillation from calcium sulfate. [Pg.27]

Hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid are widely employed in the preparation of standard solutions of acids. Both of these are commercially available as concentrated solutions concentrated hydrochloric acid is about 10.5- 12M, and concentrated sulphuric acid is about 18M. By suitable dilution, solutions of any desired approximate concentration may be readily prepared. Hydrochloric acid is generally preferred, since most chlorides are soluble in water. Sulphuric acid forms insoluble salts with calcium and barium hydroxides for titration of hot liquids or for determinations which require boiling for some time with excess of acid, standard sulphuric acid is, however, preferable. Dantrolene is the mainstay of MH treatment. It has long been available for the treatment of muscle spasm in cerebral palsy and similar diseases. It is a hydantoin derivative that was first synthesized in 1967, and reported to be effective in the treatment of porcine MH in 1975. Also in 1975, dantrolene was shown to be more effective than procainamide in the treatment of human MH, which until that time was the drug of choice. However, the intravenous preparation was not made available until November 1979. It significantly lowered mortality. The half-life of dantrolene is estimated to be 6-8 hr. Dantrolene s primary mode of action is the reduction in calcium release by the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Dantrolene also exerts a primary antiarrhythmic effect by increasing atrial and ventricular refractory periods. Side effects of dentrolene include hepatotoxicity, muscle weakness, ataxia, blurred vision, slurred speech, nausea, and vomiting. Dantrolene is not contraindicated in pregnancy, but it does cross into breast milk and its effect on the neonate is unknown. [Pg.406]

Hexamethyldisiloxane is available from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. The reagent may also be prepared by the procedure described in the following paragraph.
