Hyperaldosteronism is a syndrome caused by excessive secretion of aldosterone. It is characterized by renal loss of potassium. Sodium reabsorption in the kidney is increased and accompanied by an increase in extracellular fluid. Clinically, an increased blood pressure (hypertension) is observed. Primary hyperaldosteronism is caused by aldosterone-producing, benign adrenal tumors (Conn s syndrome). Secondary hyperaldosteronism is caused by activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Various dtugs, in particular diuretics, cause or exaggerate secondary peadosteronism. [Pg.606]

As noted above, obesity is a health problem. It is associated with both elevated mortality and morbidity. More specifically, obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, and for high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, and hyperlipidemia (elevated levels of lipids in the blood, a risk factor for atherosclerosis and its sequelae), and for cancer. [Pg.239]

Beta-blockers are medications that reduce the workload of the heart and lower blood pressure. They are commonly prescribed to relieve angina (a type of chest pain, pressure, or discomfort) or treat heart failure. They also are prescribed for people who have high blood pressure (hypertension). Several beta-blockers (metoprolol, propanolol, betaxolol, bisoprolol, and nadolol) have been detected in municipal sewage effluents up to the pg/L level (Temes 1998) and in groundwater samples (Sacher et al. 2001). [Pg.90]

Chronic exposure can result in obstructive lung disease, emphysema, and kidney disease. Cadmium may also be related to increases in blood pressure (hypertension) and is a possible lung carcinogen. Cadmium affects calcium metabolism and can result in bone loss. This condition has been referred to as Itai-Itai disease, which means Ouch-Ouch in Japanese and reflects the bone pain associated with cadmium effects on calcium. [Pg.127]

Hypertension is a sustained, reproducible increase in blood pressure. Hypertension is one of the most common diseases affecting adults living in industrialized nations. In the United States, for example, hypertension occurs in approximately 30% of the general population aged 20 and over.44 The prevalence of this disease can be even higher in certain subpopulations (e.g., 41% in African Americans), and the incidence of hypertension increases with age.44,45 If left untreated, the sustained increase in blood pressure associated with hypertension can lead to cardiovascular problems (stroke, heart failure), renal disease, and blindness.15,22 108 111 These and other medical problems ultimately lead to an increased mortality rate in hypertensive individuals. [Pg.287]

FIGURE 21-1 Schematic diagram of the possible mechanisms in essential hypertension. Various factors interact to turn on sympathetic outflow to the kidneys, heart, and peripheral vasculature, resulting in elevated blood pressure. Hypertension also causes structural and functional changes in the vasculature that help maintain the elevated pressure. [Pg.290]

Table salt, NaCl. Table salt is most commonly used as a flavoring agent. Individuals with high blood pressure (hypertension) are advised to restrict salt intake in order to reduce the amount of sodium ion, Na+, absorbed. When dissolved in water, table salt releases the sodium cation, Na+, and the chloride anion, Cl. Chloride ion is detected by silver nitrate, AgN03 a characteristic white precipitate of silver chloride forms. [Pg.87]

An association between obesity and a raised blood pressure (hypertension) was clearly demonstrated in the Build and Blood Pressure Study undertaken by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company some 40 years ago (Company 1960). In a representative epidemiological sample of some 10,000 US residents the prevalence of hypertension (blood... [Pg.97]
