Automotive seal plastic

TPV market is primarily in automotive sealing where TPVs are displacing EPDM in less demanding (e.g., static) molded window seals. However, compression set remains an issue in more demanding (e.g., dynamic) applications such as door seals. TPVs are also increasingly used in overmolding on engineering plastics to achieve soft-touch tactile feel to the molded parts. [Pg.1760]

Typical TG-DTA applications are thermal and oxidative stability, determination of relative components, decomposition temperatures and thermal decay reactions, action of heat stabilisers, thermal ageing. TG-DTA has been used to screen candidate automotive engineering plastics, elastomeric seals and lubricant additives to establish quality and understand field failures [300], The organometallic chemicals used as lubricant additives were employed to increase the thermal and/or oxidative stability of passenger car and heavy-duty diesel oils. [Pg.191]

With the high-temperature solution polymerization processes, various ethylene homo- and copolymers with different average molecular mass and copolymer compositions are produced. The product portfolio comprises PE-HD, PE-LLD, PE-VLD, and the ethylene/propylene elastomers (EPM, EPDM) (see Figure 2). The thermoplastic products have a wide range of applications [1]. The elastomeric ethylene/propylene copolymers can also be applied widely in the automotive industry, for plastics modification, in industrial applications such as seals, in electrical cables, and in tires [2], Uncured ethylene/propylene copolymers are applicable as viscosity index improvers for lubricant oils [5]. [Pg.236]

Ethylene-propylene elastomers are one of the main choices of automotive chemists and material engineers for sealing applications, as well as isolation systems, weather stripping, electrical components, etc. Heat aging resistance up to 130°C can be expected with certain sulfur cures and up to 160°C with peroxide-cured compounds [3], They also respond well to high tiller and plasticizer loads. Typical properties are shown in Table 8.7 [4],... [Pg.119]

POEs have been used in both plastic rmd rubber applications. These elastomeric polyethylenes have ability to be cross-linked via peroxide, irradiation, and moisture (if silane grafted). Potential applications include tubing, impact modifiers, low-voltage cable insulation, elastic films, foams, shoe soles, belts, automotive hoses, medical applications, gasket seals, and other electrical applications. [Pg.487]

Uses of Ethylene-Propylene Rubbers. EPDM and EPR vulcanizates are used in extruded profiles, cable insulation and jacketing, and roofing membranes. There are many automotive uses radiator hose, door and trunk seals, insulation, jacketing, and others. These elastomers are also used in applications such as window and architectural profiles, dock fenders, and washing-machine hoses. In short, their applications are extensive and diverse. Ethylene-propylene rubbers may be the most versatile of general-purpose rubbers. In addition, EP rubbers are added to polyolefin plastics as impact modifiers and as components of certain thermoplastic elastomer compositions (e.g., thermoplastic vulcanizates, which are discussed later in this chapter). [Pg.268]

The recent proliferation of metallocene-based polyolefins and polyolefin elastomers have gained their popularity owing to their density, cost, and ease of processabUity. PVC/POE blends have therefore been investigated as flexible PVC compounds. However, these blends are thermodynamically immiscible and needed suitable compatibiUzers such as the chlorinated polyethylenes (Eastman and Dadmun 2002). Since they are not miscible, POEs do not lower the PVC modulus sufficiently unless some plasticizer or a compatible elastomer such as EPE is also added. Commercially, some PVC/POE alloys are offered by TeknorApex under Flexalloy trade name with a shore A hardness 40-60 and brittle points down to —50 °C. They are claimed to have excellent low-temperature toughness, flexibility, compression set-resistance, and oil resistance. Suitable applications include automotive hoses, seals, gaskets, wire jacketing, etc. [Pg.1784]

Leone and Oliver [42] have discussed the applications of fluoroelastomers, nitrile rubber (NBR) and hydrogenated NBR in seals for automotive air-intake manifolds. They review the properties required for such seals including mechanical and low temperature properties, heat and fuel resistance, and design requirements for the seals used in conjunction with the engineering plastics components in this application. [Pg.168]

The ability of polyimides to withstand high temperatures and pressures in load bearing and dynamic applications is attracting interest in the automotive industry. Applications where polyimide parts are used include seal rings, thrust washers, wear strips, locknut inserts, valve seats, plugs, and other hydraulic components (i.e., mainly molded parts). Continued interest in high-performance plastic components (as well as ceramic parts) could lead to a need for adhesives able to withstand high temperatures in the future. [Pg.342]

The new elastomers are particularly relevant to the automotive industry because they offer better properties - particularly heat, oil and fuel resistance - than the established materials such as natural and synthetic rubber and plasticized PVC. Among the most important types are PUR elastomers, PBT block copolymers, EPDM olefinic terpolymers and ethylene-acrylic elastomers. Typical applications are the traditional rubbery ones of gaskets, seals, gaiters and cable covers, but set in the aggressive underbonnet environment of today s performance vehicles. Beyond this, however, there are examples where these materials are sufficiently versatile to have been selected, sometimes with reinforcement, as engineering components in their own right. [Pg.15]
