Thrust washers

When significant continuous loads have to be taken on a thrust washer, it is necessary to machine into the bearing surface a profile to generate a fluid film. This profile can be either a tapered wedge or occasionally a small step. [Pg.944]

Figure 12-61 also illustrates three basic types of trunnion rollbearing assemblies. Antifriction pihow blocks are the most common on modern diyers however, when the dryer load requires larger than a 12.7- to 15.2-cm-diameter bearing on the trunnion shaft, the dead-shaft antifriction bearing is substituted. This represents a considerable cost saving compared with the larger pillow blocks. They are completely sealed and continuously bathed in lubricant. Pillow-block bushings are less often used. The thrust washers are difficult to seal against dust, and they draw more power. Thrust roll mountings are depicted also in Fig. 12-61. These are usually dead-shaft. Figure 1 shows photos of the two benchtop systems that were used in these tests they consisted of a vacuum tribometer for low-speed ball-on-disk sliding in air and pure subambient H3, and an ambient-pressure tribometer using a thrust washer sliding configuration in different atmospheres, including a N/H mixture. [Pg.181]

In a different set of tests, medium-speed thrust washer sliding was done on Ti-6A1-4V. ty pe 6061-T6 Al, X-750, type 316 stainless steel, and X-750 samples coated with either a friable or a bonded commercial M0S2 coating.
