Anabolic steroids side effects

In 1959 Clinton and coworkers reported the first synthesis of some pyrazole fused androstane derivatives and described their biological activity (B-76MI40404). Stanazolol (695) or 17-methyl-2iT-5o -androst-2-eno[3,2-c]pyrazol-17/3-ol was 10 times as active as 17a -methyltestosterone in improving nitrogen retention in rats (B-80MI40406), and its myotrophic activity was only twice that of 17a-methyltestosterone. It is used as an anabolic steroid with no lasting adverse side effects. 

Athletic performance Although the anabolic steroids are generally the agents that are abused for enhancement of athletic performance, these agents have also been used for such purposes. However, these drugs are not safe and effective for this use and have a potential risk of serious side effects. 

The patterns of anabolic-androgenic steroid use by sportspeople and body-builders, and their physical and psychological side-effects and dependence potential, have been very well reviewed by Brower (2002). Much of the use is by injection, and so many of this population attend needle exchanges, with the advice on reducing infection risks relevant. To increase energy, burn fat and to go through the pain barrier some will use amphetamines and opiates, either street preparations or illicit pharmaceutical supplies. In the UK the opioid nalbuphine (Nubain) has been abused in this way and, in cases where dependence becomes established, detoxification treatments can be necessary. 

Steroids that aid in muscle development are called anabolic steroids. They are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, thus have the same muscle-building effect as testosterone. There are more than 100 different anabolic steroids which, vary in structure, duration of action, relative effects and toxicities. Androstenedione, stanozolol and dianabol are anabolic steroids. They are used to treat people suffering from traumas accompanied by muscle deterioration. The use of anabolic steroid can lead to a number of dangerous side-effects, including lowered levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol, which benefits the heart, and elevated levels of harmful low density lipoprotein, stimulation of prostate tumours, clotting disorders and liver problems. 

Some athletes continue to use anabolic steroids despite the negative side effects of these drugs. Though gyno or water retention is unlikely to occur from the use of Halotestin, there are several side effects. Since this drug is an alteration of Methyltestosterone (with a higher androgenic/lower anabolic effect) and a cl7-alkylated steroid, it is quite hard on the liver. Nose bleeds, headaches, stomach aches, and acne are some of the reported side effects. Users seldom reported profitable use that extended beyond 4-6 weeks. 

Therapists may also play an important role in educating patients about the dangers of androgen abuse. When dealing with an athletic population, physical therapists may serve as a source of information about anabolic steroids. Therapists should advise athletes about the potential side effects, such as liver, cardiovascular, and reproductive abnormalities. Therapists can also monitor blood pressure in athletes who appear to be using androgenic steroids. This interaction may help prevent a hypertensive crisis, as well as illustrate to the athlete the harmful effects of these drugs.

Anabolic steroids, antidepressants and drugs of abuse affect libido, potency, and ejaculatory function. Anabolic steroids are derivatives of testosterone, and have strong genitotropic effects. There is published evidence indicating that anabolic steroids increases sexual desire however, the frequency of erectile dysfunction is also increased. Treatment with the antidepressant fluoxetine has been associated with sexual side effects including delayed or nonexistent ejaculation and hyposexuality. Mice treated in utero with the anideukemic agent 5-aza-2/-deoxycytidine exhibit abnormal reproductive behavior and low reproductive capacity. 

Banned substances must meet several criteria for anabolic steroids set up in the 1991 Controlled Substances Act. These dietary supplements have met all the criteria but one whether or not they build muscle. A variety of current studies are underway, particularly to determine if these supplements convert to sufficient testosterone to stimulate muscle growth. If research shows this to be true, the DEA is expected to add them to the list of banned substances, since substantial quantities would likely produce the same side effects as AASs.

Referred to as anabolic steroids, such compounds used in excess are not without side effects. Anabolic steroids are generally synthetic versions of the male sex hormone testosterone and are used to promote the development of muscle mass and to enhance athletic performance. 

Side effects associated with anabolic steroids include masculinizing effects in women, liver damage, acne, hair loss, and emotional disturbance.

Up to 6% of boys in high school, including a number of nonathletes, have used anabolic steroids at least once. A particular problem with anabolic steroid use in adolescents is early closure of the growth plates at the ends of bones, resulting in permanent short stature. Other side effects are common to both adolescents and adults.
