The patterns of anabolic-androgenic steroid use by sportspeople and body-builders, and their physical and psychological side-effects and dependence potential, have been very well reviewed by Brower (2002). Much of the use is by injection, and so many of this population attend needle exchanges, with the advice on reducing infection risks relevant. To increase energy, burn fat and to go through the pain barrier some will use amphetamines and opiates, either street preparations or illicit pharmaceutical supplies. In the UK the opioid nalbuphine (Nubain) has been abused in this way and, in cases where dependence becomes established, detoxification treatments can be necessary.

If the incident requires additional pharmaceuticals and/or medical supplies, follow-on vendor managed inventory (VMI) supplies will be shipped to arrive within 24 to 36 hours. If the agent is well defined, VMI can he tailored to provide pharmaceuticals, supplies, and/or products specific to the suspected or confirmed agent(s). In this case, the VMI could act as the first option for immediate response from the SNS Program. 

In recent years, there has been an increasing regulatory focus on the marketing and supply aspects of the pharmaceutical supply chain. While these activities can be carried out manually, it is more commonplace to find that a computer system is used to support them either wholly or partially (a hybrid system). The reliance on these systems as the sole mechanism of recording information means that they should be developed to an appropriate level of compliance and vahdated for their intended use to ensure that they are able to provide a consistent output to support the regulated process. 

Any counterfeit or suspected counterfeit medicines found in the pharmaceutical supply chain should be segregated immediately from other pharmaceutical products and recorded. 

At present, the sector is lacking the infrastructure for the manufacture of antibodies to come. Despite major investments however, the high demands and long lead times prohibit a short-term solution other than a significant increase in overall productivity to close the current gaps in bio-pharmaceutical supply chains. 

There is a very long period between drug patent and market approval, during which information and graphics can leak from a company. It is not unknown for the illegal route of pharmaceutical supply to outstrip the legal route into certain markets. 

The guidelines must be read in connection with the existing legislative regulations in the sector of pharmaceutical supplies. The text of that legislation has been followed as far as possible.
