Fabiano et al. (1999) describe an explosion in the loading section of an Italian acetylene production plant in which the installed flame arresters did not stop a detonation. The arresters were deflagration type and the arrester elements were vessels packed with silica gel and aluminum plates (Fabiano 1999). It was concluded that the flame arresters used were not suitable for dealing safely with the excess pressures resulting from an acetylene decomposition, and may not have been in the proper location to stop the detonation. [Pg.9]

Zinc electrowinning takes place in an electrolytic cell and involves running an electric current from a lead-silver alloy anode through the aqueous zinc solution. A sample of monomer ( 50 g) was placed in a 100-ml round bottomed flask, which was attached to a rotary evaporator. The flask was heated to 150°C with the aid of an oil bath while stirring under vacuum (0.20 mmHg). The monomer was stirred and heated under vacuum for a period of 45 min to 1 h in order to simultaneously degas and B-stage the monomer. This mechanism has been discussed in terms of tribopolymerization models as a general approach to boundary lubrication (Kajdas 1994, 2001).
