Rotary evaporator

The mixture is extracted three times with 100-ml portions of ether, and the combined extracts are washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The ether is evaporated (rotary evaporator) and the residue distilled giving 6.15 g (83%) of 2-butanol, bp 98°/725 mm, 1.3970, [ ]p 4- 11.6°.

Following the completion of hydrolysis, the tube is opened (by scoring the sealed tube and touching it with a hot glass rod) and HCl removed by evaporation. Rotary evaporation, which removes the acid in a matter of minutes, is preferable to drying overnight in a dessicator in terms of both efficiency and the prevention of artifacts formed under the anhydrous conditions (Ikawa and Snell, 1961). Dry samples can be reconstituted in water or an appropriate buffer for subsequent analyses. 

The column was then eluted with 50 ml IN HCl. This eluant was extracted with 50 ml nanograde methylene chloride and evaporated (rotary evaporator) to a volume of 3-5 ml. This condensed solution was treated with excess diazomethane (until yellow color persists) and then further condensed to a volume of approximately 100 yl.
