Alternative gases

Principles and Characteristics The major drawbacks of ICP with argon as the support gas lie in numerous isobaric polyatomic ion interferences and in the lack of sufficient energy to ionise halogens and nonmetals to the necessary extent. With these weaknesses of ICP in mind, the possibility of generating microwave-induced plasmas with alternative gases to argon is of interest. [Pg.624]

Like Peierls, Simon had settled on ordinary gaseous difiusion (as opposed to gaseous thermal difiusion) as the best method of isotope separation after winnowing through the alternatives. Gases diffuse through porous materials at rates that are determined by their molecular weight. [Pg.339]

A wide variety of sample introduction devices are available for gas analysis by API-MS. In the study of atmospheric processes, direct sampling of ionic species and clusters in various atmospheric layers may be performed. For these in situ studies, air is directly sampled into the system, eventually through specially designed sampling tubes. Alternatively, gases may be sampled and mass analysed after ionization by electrons from a corona discharge (similar to APCI). [Pg.23]

Alternatively, gas may be introduced by blending thermally reactive chemicals which release gas into the resin at the extmder. Extmsion heat initiates the reaction to release gas and expand the melt. [Pg.454]

Filters must be provided for all gas buffers in places where the gas will pass through the gas seal. The gas should be filtered to a nominal value of 2 microns. On most critical systems, dual filters will be required to permit servicing the filters without having to shut down the compressor. This requires the use of a transfer valve that can be switched without causing a flow interruption. If liquids are anticipated, heat tracing or an alternate gas source should be the first consideration. Should this not prove to be practi-... [Pg.327]

In the United States, in particular, recent legislation has mandated sweeping improvements to urban air quality by limiting mobile source emissions and by promoting cleaner fuels. The new laws require commercial and government fleets to purchase a substantial number of vehicles powered by an alternative fuel, such as natural gas, propane, electricity, methanol or ethanol. However, natural gas is usually preferred because of its lower cost and lower emissions compared with the other available alternative gas or liquid fuels. Even when compared with electricity, it has been shown that the full fuel cycle emissions, including those from production, conversion, and transportation of the fuel, are lower for an NGV [2]. Natural gas vehicles offer other advantages as well. Where natural gas is abundantly available as a domestic resource, increased use... [Pg.269]

It is usual to protect carbon from oxidation at high temperature by the use of alternative gas atmospheres — these are generally hydrogen, nitrogen, argon or helium. The first two will react at temperatures above 1700°C to form methane and cyanogen, respectively. [Pg.868]

The oil production from thin under-gas cap zones with an active aquifer is not efficient because of the rapid breakthrough of gas or water. The water-alternating gas technology based on the injection of water solution with oil-and water-soluble polymers seems to be promising to stimulate such wells. For heavy oils, this technology can be considered as an alternative to thermal-enhanced oil recovery [1673]. [Pg.208]

Miscible water-alternating-gas (WAG) process. Injection alternates between gas (usually natural gas or C02) and water the miscible gas and oil form one phase. The WAG cycles improve sweep efficiency by increasing viscosity of the combined flood front (Figure 12). [Pg.99]

An alternative gas for ECBM is N2, which has a different enhanced recovery mechanism from C02. N2 is less sorptive than methane, with a sorptive capacity roughly 40% that of methane for high volatile bituminous B coal (Fig. 1). The N2 process works by reducing the partial pressure of methane in the secondary system, increasing the rate of desorption from the primary system, and the rate of methane diffusion through the primary system. Some N2 sorbs into the primary system but the majority remains in the secondary system. N2 also increases the... [Pg.147]

The Cardium Formation of the Pembina Field is located approximately 115 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Pembina Field was discovered in 1953 and put on primary production in 1955. It was converted to a water flood starting in 1958. In March, 2005, a C02 monitoring pilot was initiated by Penn West Energy Trust at their C02-EOR operations within the field. C02 was injected into two wells and water into several wells around the immediate pilot area. Early in 2007, the pilot was converted to a WAG (Water Alternating Gas) EOR scheme, where on an approximately monthly basis, the injection of water and C02 are switched to the other well. [Pg.155]

Owing to uncertainties in the developments of the oil and gas markets, an alternative gas-price scenario is defined with a lower gas-price forecast than the ( REF ) scenario, referred to as a low natural gas price scenario ( LNGP ). [Pg.417]

Interrante and coworkers developed two polysilaethylene precursor systems, which upon pyrolysis gave nearly phase-pure SiC (95-99% SiC) in high ceramic yield (75-90%) (Scheme ll)116. The first procedure begins with a multistep synthesis of 1,1,3,3-tetrachloro-l,3-disilacyclobutane (monomer), 5. Alternately, gas phase pyrolysis will convert 6 to 5. [Pg.2283]

Table 3 shows that the energy density of LNG per volume (MJ/1) is higher than any alternative gas-based fuels, and offers a range that is roughly 2.5 times the range of CNG. The table also shows that LNG has almost 60% the energy density of diesel fuel. [Pg.119]

A GA method has been developed [92, 93] for ab initio phasing of low-resolution X-ray diffraction data from highly symmetric structures. The direct-space parameterization used incorporates information on structural symmetry, and has been applied to study the structures of viruses, with resolution as high as 3 A [93]. A GA has also been introduced [94] to speed up molecular replacement searches by allowing simultaneous searching of the rotational and translational parameters of a test model, while maximizing the correlation coefficient between the observed and calculated diffraction data. An alternative GA for sixdimensional molecular replacement searches has been described [95,96] and GA methods have also been used [97] to search for heavy atom sites in difference Patterson functions. [Pg.89]
