Production intermittent

There were many different executives who championed polystyrene production intermittently at Monsanto during its 40 years of styrene and polystyrene production. However, Ray Boyer championed the production of polystyrene at Dow consistently for a period of over 40 years. He is recognized not only as a pioneer but also as the world s most knowledgeable polystyrene scientist. He was one of the few polymer scientists to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering (1978).

Flow Sheet. Most purge-swing appHcations use two fixed-bed adsorbers to provide a continuous flow of feed and product (Fig. 16). Single beds are used when the flow to be treated is intermittent or cycHc. Because the purge flow is invariably greater than that of adsorption, purge is carried out in the down-flow direction to prevent bed lifting, and adsorption is up-flow. 

Soa.king. The hides are weighed and counted into production batches. For pre-fleshed and trimmed catde hides the batches are about 3—5 t when the processing is in dmms. If the tannery has hide processors the batches may be up to 10 t. Water is added to cover the hides and allow free movement of the load. The dmm is turned intermittently during the normal 8 to 16-hour soaking period. 

The Natural Reactor. Some two biUion years ago, uranium had a much higher (ca 3%) fraction of U than that of modem times (0.7%). There is a difference in half-hves of the two principal uranium isotopes, U having a half-life of 7.08 x 10 yr and U 4.43 x 10 yr. A natural reactor existed, long before the dinosaurs were extinct and before humans appeared on the earth, in the African state of Gabon, near Oklo. Conditions were favorable for a neutron chain reaction involving only uranium and water. Evidence that this process continued intermittently over thousands of years is provided by concentration measurements of fission products and plutonium isotopes. Usehil information about retention or migration of radioactive wastes can be gleaned from studies of this natural reactor and its products (12). 

The processes employed in manufacturing a ceramic are defined and controlled to produce a product with properties suited to a specific appHcation. Processing—microstmcture—property relationships are deterrnined by characterizing the ceramic raw materials, mixes, and the formed ceramic body intermittently during processing and after final thermal consoHdation. It is possible to modify and optimize processes to optimize properties and to identify and correct processing deficiencies when less than optimal properties are obtained. Examples of some process—microstmcture—property relations in advanced ceramics are outlined in Figure 4. 

The primary substrates or support iaclude many types of paper and paperboard, polymer films such as polyethylene terephthalate, metal foils, woven and nonwoven fabrics, fibers, and metal cods. Although the coating process is better suited to continuous webs than to short iadividual sheets, it does work very well for intermittent coating, such as ia the printing process. In general, there is an ideal coater arrangement for any given product.

Oxygen corrosion involves many accelerating factors such as the concentration of aggressive anions beneath deposits, intermittent operation, and variable water chemistry. How each factor contributes to attack is often difficult to assess by visual inspection alone. Chemical analysis of corrosion products and deposits is often beneficial, as is more detailed microscopic examination of corrosion products and wasted regions. 

Affected areas are essentially free of deposits and corrosion products, although these may be found nearby (Fig. 11.4). Affected areas may be covered with deposits and corrosion products if erosion-corrosion occurs intermittently, and the component is removed following a period in which erosion-corrosion was inactive.
