The manufacture of alkyd resins (qv), which are obtained by the reactions of polybasic acids or anhydrides, polyhydric alcohols, and fatty oils and acids, consumes about 17% of the phthahc anhydride demand. While materials such as maleic anhydride, isophthahc acid, and fumaric acid can also be used, phthahc anhydride is the most important. The resin provides a binder for coatings that are apphed for either protection or decoration. Ak quahty concerns have put alkyd resins under pressure from water-based coatings which do not emit organic vapors upon drying. [Pg.485]

Eor water-based alkyd paints, greater (0.2% cobalt on a resin basis) concentrations of drier are required than for other systems because the reaction of the drier with water decreases the activity of the catalyst. The cobalt content of oil-based paint formulations is usually 0.01—0.05% cobalt. Although the concentration of cobalt in the formulations is small, the large volume of paints, inks, and varnishes constitute a significant use for cobalt chemicals. [Pg.381]

Stripping of top coats soaked by rain or sea-water has occurred with alkyd-resin-based paint systems, mainly on ships. These are the most important components of paint. Coatings can be either clear or opaque (containing pigments) and either solvent- or water-based. This isoindoline nickel complex pigment is mainly recommended for the coloration of metallics and effect coatings, especially for water based systems. P.R.271 affords yellowish to medium red shades, providing a bright flop in metallics. Alkyd/melamine resin systems may safely be overcoated and withstand exposure of 140°C for 30 minutes. The flow properties of P.R.271 in these systems and in polyester cellulose acetobutyrate base coat systems are good, but there is a certain tendency to flocculate. [Pg.401]

Atmospheric corona discharge has been used to increase the surface energy of wood surfaces by oxidative activation (Back and Danielsson, 1987). Improved bonding of a water-based acrylate lacquer was found following corona treatment of the wood surface, with no improvement found when a solvent-based alkyd system was used. [Pg.145]

A further progress perspective in the field of water-based paints could be their use for painting ships [205]. However, these studies are only in the beginning. The main difficulty is corrosion prevention. Maximum protection from stress corrosion cracking is ensured by alkyd paints combined with phenolic epoxy paints during a 6.5-year exposure [206]. These data were obtained on pre-contaminated steel plates. In Russia now water-based dispersion primers with anticorrosive properties have been developed and manufactured [207]. This was possible after incorporation of corrosion inhibitors combined with surfactants into the formulations. [Pg.572]

The stability improvement of Ti02 suspensions is important not only for water-based paints, but also for paints based on non-polar or low-polar solvents. It is shown in [208] that Ti02 powders modified with an anionic surfactant, e.g. sodium dodecyl sulphate, are dispersed to smaller sizes, and their sedimentation stability increases. The production of water-alkyd emulsions is inhibited due to low mechanical stability. These emulsions can easily break when exposed to shear forces such as those produced by pumps, and when intensively agitated during dispersion. [209] demonstrates that most stable emulsions can be obtained with alkyds showing high acid numbers, as well as with highly polymerised alkyds of low viscosities. [Pg.572]

Side and cross members are pretreated by blasting and phosphating. An electrode-posited primer coating follows and is sometimes immediately overcoated with a topcoat based on an air-drying alkyd or epoxy ester, or on an oven-drying alkyd-melamine resin combination. After assembly of the truck, a third layer (i.e., a second topcoat) is applied that serves as a supply finish. These finishes are mostly two-pack acrylic aliphatic isocyanate topcoats. They are synthesized from polymers of primarily polymethacrylate, acrylate esters, and polyethyl acrylate (Fig. 13.2). Acrylate resins are very stable in oxygen and UV light and are resistant to weathering and frequently used in the automobile industry as topcoats. Water-based acrylics are used as household paints. It adds a slight texture to finishes without changing the color, and is chemical and solvent resistant.
