Ship paints

These apply also to marine painting, but here additional factors must be taken into account. The present action refers specially to differences between ships painting and structural steel painting.

Natural reds such as persian red (found at Hormuz in the Persian Gulf), spani.sh red and burnt sienna contain ca. 50% iron oxide and represent the most important group of natural mineral pigments. Their tinting strength increases with increasing a-Fc203 content, which can amount to 95% in the purest sorts. Their utilization is mostly limited to primers, cheap ships paints and house paints (USA, Scandinavia).

Base metal pollution of ocean is caused not only by the input of polluted river water, but also by dissolution from ship paint. This Cu flux is about 1 % of riverine flux (Goldberg 1976).

The British anthracite from north Devon forms the pigment called Bideford Hack, which was widely used during the eighteenth and nineteenth cenmries as an industrial exterior paint, primarily used for ship painting (Bristow, 1996b). 

This is listed by Fiedler and Bayard (1997) as one of the names applied to either Scheele s and/or emerald green qq.v. though it would seem to relate wholly to the improved low-alkali version of Scheele s green produced by Parker in 1812 and patented by him. Parker proposed his product for a mnnber of applications including house and ship painting, claiming that it would be less affected by salt water (Parker, 1812).
