Improving giycaemic control may not only reduce the rate of non-enzymatic glycosyiation and monosaccharide autooxidation, but lower polyol pathway activity. In addition, it should have a beneficial effect on other haemodynamic and hormonal factors involved in the development of diabetic vascular disease. However, in studies of diabetic retinopathy, rapid control of glucose levels by intensive insulin therapy has been shown to worsen vascular disease initially and it could be postulated that a sudden improvement in retinal blood flow promotes further free-radical damage as part of a reperfusion-ischaemic injury. [Pg.194]

Generally, one may establish that in some cases greatly enhanced concentration fluctuations occur under flow, in others, however, the size of concentration fluctuations is reduced and, obviously, flow promotes mutual miscibility of the polymers. Concentration fluctuations are accompanied by inhomogeneities of transport quantities as shear viscosity and diffusity. In a flow field the molecules are transferred into a non-equilibrium situation of extension. Two polymer molecules in a state of excess extension feel an additional repulsion due to the enhanced normal stress difference. Thus, the rate of dissipation by diffusion is low compared with the shear rate and the concentration fluctuations tend to grow. The opposite is true for a state of lower extension. Brush marks. Lines of unevenness that remain in the dried paint film after brush application. Brush marks and ropiness are associated with poor flow and sticky application. These defects are more often encoimtered in highly pigmented products and in certain latex paint formulations. Tbo rapid recovery of consistency in a thixotropic system will also cause these defects. The lignin residues from wood pulp production are another class of extractives currently receiving attention as phenolic resin additives. Compounds of adipates, palmitates. sebacates. and stearates are used as lubricants and plasticizers for many types of plastics, including PVC and engineering plastics. Cetyl palmitate can be used in place of natural wax and can act as a lubricant for engineering plastics. Octyl and iso-octyl palmitate are clear oily liquids with anti-blocking properties and additional heat stability that are also used as plasticizers for PVC and as a viscosity modifier for plastisols.
