A variety of ionomers have been described in the research literature, including copolymers of a) styrene with acrylic acid, b) ethyl acrylate with methacrylic acid, and (c) ethylene with methacrylic acid. A relatively recent development has been that of fluorinated sulfonate ionomers known as Nafions, a trade name of the Du Pont company. These ionomers have the general structure illustrated (10.1) and are used commercially as membranes. These ionomers are made by copolymerisation of the hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon monomers with minor amounts of the appropriate acid or ester. Terpolymers in which the acrylate monomer is the major component are useful as ethylene-acrylate elastomers (trade name Vamac) [Hagman and Crary, 1985]. A small amount of an alkenoic acid is present to introduce sites (C=C) for subsequent crosslinking via reaction with primary diamines (Sec. 9-2d). These elastomers have excellent oil resistance and stability over a wide temperature range (—50 to 200°C). They are superior to nitrile and chloroprene rubbers. Although not superior to silicone and fluorocarbon elastomers, they are less costly uses include automotive (hydraulic system seals, hoses) and wire and cable insulation. [Pg.531]

Propene is used as a starting material for numerous other compounds. Chief among these are isopropyl alcohol, acrylonitrile, and propylene oxide. Isopropyl alcohol results from the hydration of propylene during cracking and is the primary chemical derived from propylene. Isopropyl alcohol is used as a solvent, antifreeze, and as rubbing alcohol, but its major use is for the production of acetone. Acrylonitrile is used primarily as a monomer in the production of acrylic fibers. Polymerized acrylonitrile fibers are produced under the trade names such as Orion (DuPont) and Acrilan (Monsanto). Acrylonitrile is also a reactant in the synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubber, and resins. Methyl methacrylate is only one of a family of monomers, including the various esters of acrylic, methacrylic, and ethacrylic acids, which are polymerized to produce the thermoplastic resins known as the acrylates. A wide variety of reactions and starting materials may be utilized for their production however, the principal commercial product is polymethyl methacrylate, sold by Du Pont and Rohm Haas under the trade names of Lucite and Plexiglas, respectively. These materials were introduced to the United States market in 1936 (44) and have received widespread acceptance due principally to their outstanding optical properties. Production in 1949 was reported as about 22,000,000 to 25,000,000 pounds and peak wartime capacity was above30,000,000 pounds. While this can account for only about 2% of the current production of propylene for chemical purposes, the acrylate resins are of considerable commercial importance as they are sold at a relatively high price and are the only materials available that will meet the requirements for certain military and civilian products. [Pg.318]

Another area in which smart hydrogels are likely to find application is the development of more efficient drug delivery systems. One material that has showed promise in this held is called Pluronic-PAA. Its trade name is Smart Hydrogel . The material is a mixture of two polymers, one of which is poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), which attaches readily to other biological materials and is responsive to changes in pH. The other polymer is a copolymer of poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). This copolymer belongs to a family of polymers known by the trade name of Pluronic polymers. [Pg.146]
