Doctoral dissertations

Historically, the development of the acrylates proceeded slowly they first received serious attention from Otto Rohm. AcryUc acid (propenoic acid) was first prepared by the air oxidation of acrolein in 1843 (1,2). Methyl and ethyl acrylate were prepared in 1873, but were not observed to polymerize at that time (3). In 1880 poly(methyl acrylate) was reported by G. W. A. Kahlbaum, who noted that on dry distillation up to 320°C the polymer did not depolymerize (4). Rohm observed the remarkable properties of acryUc polymers while preparing for his doctoral dissertation in 1901 however, a quarter of a century elapsed before he was able to translate his observations into commercial reaUty. He obtained a U.S. patent on the sulfur vulcanization of acrylates in 1912 (5). Based on the continuing work in Rohm s laboratory, the first limited production of acrylates began in 1927 by the Rohm and Haas Company in Darmstadt, Germany (6). Use of this class of compounds has grown from that time to a total U.S. consumption in 1989 of approximately 400,000 metric tons. Total worldwide consumption is probably twice that.

In 1901 Otto Rohm reported on his studies of acrylic polymers for his doctoral dissertation. His interest in these materials, however, did not cease at this stage and eventually in 1927 the Rohm and Hass concern at Darmstadt, Germany commenced limited production of poly(methyl acrylate) under the trade names...

While still a student at the Academy, Ipatieffbegan to make a name for himself in the Russian chemical community as he began to publish some of his laboratory findings. His first professional milestone as a chemist came in 18h() when he joined Russia s Physical-Chemical Society. Here he came into close contact with Russia s most famous chemists, including Dimitri Mendeleev, discoverer of the periodic table and one of the founders ol the Society. In 1891, upon graduating from the school, he was appointed lecturer in chemistry at the Academy where he also continued to undertake original chemical research for his doctoral dissertation. In 1895, he was made assistant professor and, upon completion and acceptance of his dissertation in 1899, he became a full professor of chemistry.

In the autumn of 1907, he started to study chemistry at the Institute chaired by Adolf von Baeyer at the University of Munich, where he passed the first Verband s examination after three semesters. In 1909, he continued his studies at the University of Berlin, gaining his doctorate in 1911 under Emil Fischer. The subject of his doctoral dissertation was Syntheses of Certain New Glucosides. The tremendous personality of Emil Fischer left its mark on Helferich for the rest of his life. In conversation with Helferich, one was often aware of the great veneration he always felt for his tutor and mentor. 

With the experimental results accumulated during his stay in Berlin, Garcia Gonzalez prepared two doctoral dissertations, entitled New Crystalline Phosphoric Esters of o-Fructose and Tests on Some Assumed Phases of Alcoholic Fermentation, which he presented in order to receive his doctorates in Chemistry and in Pharmacy, respectively, at the University of Madrid in 1932. A theory close to modem concepts was developed by a Swede, Svante Arrhenins. The hrst version of the theory was outlined in his doctoral dissertation of 1883, the hnal version in a classical paper published at the end of 1887. This theory took up van t Hoff s suggeshons, published some years earlier, that ideal gas laws could be used for the osmotic pressure in soluhons. It had been fonnd that anomalously high values of osmotic pressure which cannot be ascribed to nonideality sometimes occur even in highly dilute solutions.
