Accident localization system

The initial conditions of the ALS, i.e. the pressures in the compartments and the air and water temperatures, should be taken (within their permissible ranges) so as to have the least heat capacity of the system and thereby the fastest temperature rise. On the other hand, for assessment of the radioactive release outside the ALS, compartment leakages should be set at their maximum within the given range, even if the pressures in the compartments become somewhat lower in this case. [Pg.42]

This Safety Report is intended for use in the performance of safety analyses of nuclear power plants both under construction and in operation. While focusing on the performance of the reactor and its systems, including the accident localization system (ALS), during transients and accidents, this Safety Report takes account of best estimate analysis and conservative analysis. The application of best estimate codes that use well grounded acceptance criteria and conservative input data provides a more reasonable assessment of the safety margins in various situations. Adequate conservatism in input data is normally achieved by setting the parameter values at the worst boundary of the range of deviations allowed by the technical specifications of the nuclear power plant [7]. [Pg.2]

The Major Accident Reporting System (MARS) is a distributed information network, consisting of 15 local databases on a MS-Windows platform in each Member State of the European Union and a central UNIX-based analysis system at the European Commission s Joint Research Centre in Ispra (MAHB) that allows complex text retrieval and pattern analysis. [Pg.285]

Every laboratory should have an internal accident-reporting system. This includes provisions for investigating the cause of an injury as well as any potentially serious incident that does not result in injury. The primary aim of such investigations should be to make recommendations to improve safety, not to assign blame for an incident. Local legal regulations may require reporting procedures for accidents or injuries. [Pg.513]

The first approach is traditional and is based on increasing the amount and efficiency of various protecting and localizing systems which reduce the possibility of severe accidents and hazardous factor of their results. Practical realization of this approach, theoretically based on probabalistic safety analysis (PSA), results in more complicated and expensive installation, deterioration of its other characteristics and, nevertheless, in principle, does not exclude the possibility of severe accident with catastrophic consequences because there have not been eliminated the internal causes of arising the accident. [Pg.134]

The second approach is based on the concept of the RI with inherent safety ensuring its selfprotection in which the causes of arising the severe accidents witii catastrophic consequences have been deterministically eliminated by nature laws. This approach does not require the construction a lot of protecting and localizing systems, which, in some cases, themselves may become the causes of accidents. [Pg.134]

At Leningrad 3 and 4 and Ignalina 1 and 2, the system for condensation of accidental steam is housed in accident localization towers. [Pg.32]

The newer VVER-440 model 213 differs from the 230 in that it has an emergency core cooling system with limited capacity and a bubbler/condenser tower which is connected with the accident localization compartments of each unit to mitigate the effects of severe accidents. This tower has a rectangular cross section and contains 12 levels of suppression pool trays (in total about 1960 trays). The tower also houses four large receiver volumes referred to as gas holders or air traps. [Pg.33]

In addition to the requirements set by local legislation (including an accident register) you will need to ensure that you have set up a detailed event-investigation system designed to educate staff as well as to collect data. There should also be an accident reporting system. [Pg.20]

Two other techniques, ESSA and EERA, are used to assess the effects of major accidents. Essential systems survivability analysis (ESSA) is as its name implies analysis is carried out to see whether essential systems such as emergency shutdown (ESD) or fire-flghting systems can survive, say, flood or localized fire. Escape, evacuation and rescue analysis (EERA) is used in particular in offshore platforms... [Pg.162]

Safety systems are represented by emergency protection system of the reactor (EP), system of leak localization in the SGs, autonomous cooling system (ACS), and passive heat removal system (PHRS). Of them only EP is a dedicated safety system, while other systems, namely the system of leak localization in the SGs, ACS, and PHRS combine the functions of normal operating systems and accident prevention systems. [Pg.163]

Accident defenses may be regarded as a series of barriers (engineered safety systems, safety procedures, emergency training, etc.). As barriers fail, incipient failures become real. Inappropriate management policies create inadequate PIFs, which give rise to opportunities foi ermr when initiated by local triggers or unusual conditions. [Pg.166]

These reports were in addition to the internal reporting for OSHA PSM and various local or state requirements. While Quality Chemical had long ago consolidated a number of these programs, there were still four different accident/incident reporting systems—one for external reporting of releases, one for external reporting of injuries and other nonrelease events, one for a corporate-wide database and one for each site itself. [Pg.152]

Environmental radiation monitoring in Japan mainly comprises two different systems. One is radiation measurements and radioactivity analyses of various samples taken from the vicinities of 14 nuclear facilities and the other is a nationwide network consisting of 47 public hygiene institutes of local (prefectural) government with countermeasures against the radioactive fallout due to nuclear explosion tests or a severe accident in a foreign country, such as the Chernobyl accident. [Pg.398]

Tetanus occurs when Cl. tetani, ubiquitous in the soil and the faeces of herbivores, contaminates wounds, especially deep puncture-type lesions. These might be the result of a minor trauma such as a splinter, or a major one such as a motor vehicle accident. At these sites, tissue necrosis, and possibly also microbial growth, reduce the oxygen tension to allow this anaerobe to multiply. Its growth is accompanied by the production of a highly potent toxin that passes up peripheral nerves and diffuses locally within the central nervous system. The toxin has a strychnine-like action and affects normal function at the synapses. As the motor nerves of the brainstem are the shortest, the cranial nerves are the first affected, with twitches of the eyes and spasms of the jaw (lockjaw). [Pg.111]
