The action of redox metal promoters with MEKP appears to be highly specific. Cobalt salts appear to be a unique component of commercial redox systems, although vanadium appears to provide similar activity with MEKP. Cobalt activity can be supplemented by potassium and zinc naphthenates in systems requiring low cured resin color lithium and lead naphthenates also act in a similar role. Quaternary ammonium salts (14) and tertiary amines accelerate the reaction rate of redox catalyst systems. The tertiary amines form beneficial complexes with the cobalt promoters, facilitating the transition to the lower oxidation state. Copper naphthenate exerts a unique influence over cure rate in redox systems and is used widely to delay cure and reduce exotherm development during the cross-linking reaction. 

Copper quinolinolate (oxine copper) is the chelate of divalent copper and 8-hydroxyquinoline and shares most of its market with copper naphthenate, which is a complex copper salt of mixed naphthenic acids. The principal uses are in wood treatments and some military textiles, where the green color is not objectionable. Copper naphthenate has an odor but is cheaper than oxine. Both copper naphthenate and zinc naphthenate have performed well in environment tests, with exposure to soil above-ground, as well as concrete (33). 

A number of zinc compounds with organic constituents (e.g., zinc salts of organic acids) have therapeutic uses. These include antidandruff zinc pyridinethione, antifungal zinc undecylenate used to treat athlete s foot, zinc stearate and palmitate (zinc soap), and antibacterial zinc bacitracin. Zinc naphthenate is used as a low-toxicity wood preservative, and zinc phenolsulfonate has insecticidal properties and was once used as an intestinal antiseptic. The inhalation of zinc soaps by infants has been known to cause acute fatal pneumonitis characterized by lung lesions similar to, but more serious than, those caused by talc. Zinc pyridine thione (zinc 2-pyridinethiol-l-oxide) has been shown to cause retinal detachment and blindness in dogs this is an apparently species-specific effect because laboratory tests at the same and even much higher dosages in monkeys and rodents do not show the same effect. 

This real-world exercise tests the efficacy of a feeding repellent in free-ranging mammals. It constitutes the counterpart to the repellent effect of methyl anthranilate on feeding by birds (see Chap. 3). The experiment works at any place with wild squirrels and in any season. The many mammal repellents on the market are aimed against deer, predators such as raccoons, foxes and coyotes, and rodents such as voles, mice, squirrels, woodchucks, and others. Mammal repellents are known under names such as copper naphthenate, trimethacarb, zinc naphthenate, and ziram.

One example of C-vinylation of an aromatic compound is the reaction of /7-tert-butyl-phenol and acetylene [47] to give ethylidene-bridged oligomers (eq. (21)), which are formed by dual attack of the aromatic compound on acetylene. The catalyst employed is zinc naphthenate. These products are used, inter alia, as vulcanizing auxiliaries in the tire industry. 

Zinc naphthenate is used as a component in over-the-counter wood preservative products. It can be formulated as either a solvent borne or waterborne preservative. 

In addition to tin compounds such as dibutyltin dilaurate and dibutyltin diacetate, various other metal compounds have been claimed to be effective deblocking catalysts such as zinc naphthenate (70), lead naphthenate, bismuth salts, and titanates (71), and Ca, Mg, Sr, or Ba salts of hexanoic, octanoic, naphthenic, or linolenic acid (72) and metal acetyl acetonates (73). Also combinations of organotin compounds and quaternary ammonium salts have been claimed to have a synergistic effect in lowering the deblocking temperature (74).
