Zinc pyridinethione

A number of zinc compounds with organic constituents (e.g., zinc salts of organic acids) have therapeutic uses. These include antidandruff zinc pyridinethione, antifungal zinc undecylenate used to treat athlete s foot, zinc stearate and palmitate (zinc soap), and antibacterial zinc bacitracin. Zinc naphthenate is used as a low-toxicity wood preservative, and zinc phenolsulfonate has insecticidal properties and was once used as an intestinal antiseptic. The inhalation of zinc soaps by infants has been known to cause acute fatal pneumonitis characterized by lung lesions similar to, but more serious than, those caused by talc. Zinc pyridine thione (zinc 2-pyridinethiol-l-oxide) has been shown to cause retinal detachment and blindness in dogs this is an apparently species-specific effect because laboratory tests at the same and even much higher dosages in monkeys and rodents do not show the same effect.

Pyrithione (zinc salt of) is used as a component of antidandruff shampoos and as a bactericide in soap and detergent formulations. This compound (2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide) exists in equilibrium with N-hydroxy-2-pyridinethione and is a fungicide and bactericide, prepared by reaction of 2-chloropyridine N-oxide with sodium hydrosulfide and sodium sulfide. This compound is also known as Omadine, Its formula is shown below. 

Penicillamine (D-(3,(3-dimethylcysteine) is an effective chelator of copper, mercury, zinc and lead which promotes the excretion of these metals in the urine. It is clinically used in patients with Wilson s disease, with rheumatoid arthritis and with heavy-metal intoxications. Ziram and ferbam are the zinc and the iron salts respectively of dimethyl-dithiocarbamic acid (Figure 20.44). They are widely used as selective fungicides in agriculture. Pyrithione (1 -hydroxy-2(l//)-pyridinethione), as its zinc salt is used in dermatology as antiseborrheic.
