Oxinate-copper

Hydroxyquinoline (oxine, 8-quinolinol) [148-24-3] M 145.2, m 71-73 , 75-76 , 76 , b 267 pKj 4.91, pK 9.81. Crystd from hot EtOH, acetone, pet ether (b 60-80 ) or water. Crude oxine can be purified by pptn of copper oxinate, followed by liberation of free oxine with H2S or by steam distn after acidification with H2SO4. Stored in the dark. Forms metal complexes. The same kind of a rate law has been found for the mercuration of copper oxinate in glacial acetic acid. Here the rate of formation of the mercurated complex is given by the expression ... 

Without supporting rate data, it is not possible to exclude a mechanism change of a given reaction when attacking agents are changed. Thus, the benzoylation of copper oxinate can be easily effected when aluminum chloride is used as a catalyst. The acetylation of this same complex has not yet been successfully carried out even under forcing conditions (5). It seems possible that coordination can seriously disrupt the normal path of a reaction when that path involves w complex formation. 

An indirect AAS method was described for EDTA in the antibiotic streptomycin [42]. The method involved formation of the Ni(II) complex with EDTA, release of complexed Ni(II) by pH adjustment, and subsequent determination of Ni(II) by AAS. EDTA was also determined through its masking effect on the extraction of copper oxinate into methylisobutyl ketone at pH 6.5. The decrease in AAS signal of Cu(II) was linearly proportional to the EDTA concentration [43].

Benzotrisfuroxan forms complexes with various organic molecules two of these, and the uncomplexed molecule, have been studied by X-ray methods. The complex with the thiophene-cyclophane (19) gave structural parameters for both molecules, but the copper oxinate complex appeared to possess a disordered orientation of the trifuroxan. The shortness of the exocyclic N—0 bond is remarkable, " as has been noted also in simple furoxans. ... 

The range of action of carboxamides can be extended also to fungus species less sensitive to them by combination with protective fungicides, which also produce a partial synergistic effect in the combined seed-dressings. Copper oxine, chloroneb, mancozeb and other fungicides are used in combination with carboxamides (Richard and Vallier, 1969 Ranney, 1972 Baicu and Nagler, 1974). 

Powell (1946) and Mason (1948) found that the 2 1 complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline with copper, oxine-copper, has a stronger fungicidal action than 8-hydroxyquinoline. Albert et al. (1953) attributed this to the fact that the organic part of the compound makes copper lipoid-soluble and thus accelerates its penetration into the cell. Inside the cell the 2 1 complex dissociates into a 1 1 complex and free 8-hydroxyquinoline. The active toxic agent is the ionised 1 1 complex of nonlipoid properties, which reacts with the enzymes in the fungus and blocks their function. This theory is also supported by the research work of McNew and Gershon (1969).
