Laser-based profilometry systems have also been applied for nondestructive testing and measurement of both smooth-bore and rifled gun tubes. Working through Small Business Innovation Research program, the U.S. Army has developed laser-based profilometry systems for the inspection of the 120mm cannon used on the MI-Al Abrams main battle tank. Systems have also been built to measure the erosion of 25 mm and 155 mm rifled gun tubes. 

The standard doesn t require a procedure for Management Review and while it does require procedures for Design Control it does not specify that a Design Review Procedure is required. The phrases consistent with and in accordance with have the same meaning as both imply compatibility and agreement. In small business establishments, it is usually quite easy to determine the exact source of all capital. Therefore, the interest costs can be obtained with little difficulty. For example, suppose that a young chemical engineer has 20,000 and decides to set up a small plant for producing antifreeze from available raw materials. For a working-capital plus fixed-capital investment of 20,000, the chemical engineer determines that the proposed plant can provide a total yearly profit of 8000 before income taxes. Since the investment was a personal one, interest obviously could not be included as a cost. If it has been necessary to borrow the 20,000 at an annual interest rate of 10 percent, interest would have been a cost, and the total profit would have been 8000 — (0.10) x ( 20,000) = 6000 per year.

Most people who own their own small businesses work more than 40 hours a week. During the time when the store is open, you must be available to help customers and supervise employees, depending on the size of your operation. Even if you are just starting out with a small store, you will need at least one other employee to cover the hours when you cannot be in the store or when you are tending to other chores. 

About 10 percent of the work force in the United States are self-employed. People choose to own and operate their own businesses for a variety of reasons to advance professionally by becoming a business owner, to earn more money, or to gain status. If you start your own business, you should be well prepared. Talk to business owners about their experiences and read books about business ownership. The United States Small Business Administration reports that over half of all new businesses fail within the first five years, and you do not want to be among them. 

Take the online courses offered at the Small Business Administration website so you will know how to start your own business, even if you think that will be years in the future. If you are already working in a natural foods store, ask the customers why they prefer natural and organic foods. If you are on good terms with your family physician, ask the doctor if there are any special benefits to natural and organic foods. Explain that your interest is more than just casual, you genuinely want to educate yourself about this process. 

Jim used his redundancy money to start a small business growing pot plants to supply local shops and offices. He had always been a very successful gardener so he was horrified when plants in his new greenhouse suffered a severe attack of greenfly. He collected a large container of commercial insecticide containing the organophosphate malathion from his supplier and set to work with his spray. 

At Air Products we do work at national laboratories. We also work with other companies, both large companies, in the case of Chemical Industry Fnvironmental Technology Projects—a limited liability company that we formed with DuPont, Akzo Nobel—and with a lot of Small Business Innovation Research-type companies that bring a lot to the table from a feasibility standpoint in terms of new ideas. But in the remainder of this paper, I focus on the industry-university relationships and partnerships. 

For farmers who sign up, as long as the contracts are rolled over, there are profits to be made, although at considerable risk. The contracts are short term, the work schedules detailed, and the set-up and supplies mandatory. The contract farmers are in theory small-business entrepreneurs, but aside from the fact that they risk their land and buildings, they have not much more control over their working day than do assembly-line workers. 

More than one third of occupational related injuries or illnesses reported by employees to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are estimated to be caused by musculoskeletal disorders. In 2003 federal regulations based on occupational management guidelines that are 15 years old are still not finalized as a result of OSHA continuing to work with Congress and small business advocacy groups to complete a rule that is deemed fair to both employees and employers.

Occupational illness and injury187 cost 30-40 billion dollars/yr in the United States.188 In 1994 there were 6.8 million injuries and illnesses in private industry, amounting to 8.4 cases per 100 workers. Nearly two-thirds were disorders associated with repeated trauma, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.189 The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 set up the National Institute Safety and Health (NIOSH) to study the problem and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to deal with it through inspections and regulations. Both have received so much criticism of their effectiveness that they are struggling to find more effective ways to deal with the problem.190 NIOSH is searching for practical ways to protect workers, especially those in small businesses from methylene chloride, tetrachloroethylene, diesel exhaust in coal mines, isocyanates, 2-methoxyethanol, and others. OSHA is about to expand a plan that worked well in Maine, a state that used to have one of the worst accident and illness records in the United States.191 The 200 firms with the worst records were asked to look for deficiencies and to correct them. They were also inspected. These measures cut injuries and illnesses over a 2-year period. 

As I ve worked with Anger types over the years. I m struck by how quick they are to blame others—and how unaware they can be about their own role in conflicts. Rick, as we ve seen, is a prime example, but my patient Joanne was another. Joanne was a woman in her early fifties who had founded her own small business nearly twenty years earlier. A small business entrepreneur is considering buying an extruder for a 2-in. (ID) PVC pipe production. A two 8-h/d shift operation for a 300-day work year is planned. If the extruder is to be operated to produce 20 ft of pipe per hour and pipe thickness is 0.5 in., suggest the power rating for the electric motor appropriate for this extrader. Because people move across both countries and organizations, and many have extensive global experience not limited to their current affiliation or location, we listed names of the expert panelists without affiliation, title, or location. Although many users have requested a more quantitative profile of the panelists, we resist providing it because many of the expert panelists have been influenced by multiple experiences. The Small Business Compliance Policy defines small businesses and small governments as those that have one hundred or fewer people working for it. The EPA will waive 100 percent of a small business penalty, but retains the right to seek the full amount of any significant benefit the business obtained from its violation.
