Associated Disordes

Association of essential hyperlipemia with hyperuricemia and gout has been reported (Wolfson et al. 1959, Fulton 1952, Schettleb et al. 1957) and, in our experience, is quite frequently encountered. Conversely, Berkowitz and Glass-man (1965), emphasizing the relationship of gout, hyperlipidemia and diabetes, found elevated glyceride levels in 24 out of 25 subjects with gout. [Pg.474]

Lowering of plasma lipid levels in EHL is obviously desirable even though the incidence of atherosclerotic complications still remains to be established. Incapacity resulting from abdominal episodes and the occurrence of xanthomatosis would be sufficient reason to institute an effective therapeutic regimen in any case. [Pg.474]

A conscientiously executed dietary program represents the cornerstone of therapy in essential hyperlipemias. That such treatment will be quite different for [Pg.474]

Limitation of fat intake represents the most effective tool in exogenous hyperlipemia. The amount of fat tolerated will vary in different individuals, but probably should never exceed 15% of total calories. The kind of fat seems to be of minor importance with regard to control of exogenous hyperlipemia but in view of the fat restriction a sufficient intake of linoleate should be assured. Wilkinson (1956), because of the delayed clearing of alimentary fat, has recommended a program of spaced fat feeding (one fat meal per day). Medium chain triglyceride has been recommended by Ahrens and Spritz (1963) and Furman et al. (1963) because of its absorption into the portal circulation (Bloom et al. 1951) and consequent lack of contribution to chylomicron formation (Job ST and Schett-LER 1956). [Pg.475]

In pure carbohydrate-induced hyperlipemia, restriction of carbohydrate compatible with acceptability of the diet and prevention of ketosis is recommended. Thus 50—70% of calories may be given as fat with a carbohydrate content below 25%. If a significant amount of the fat comes from unsaturated sources, it may be cleared from plasma faster than saturated fats (Engelberg 1964) and hypercholesterolemia may be further reduced. Such a regimen should also be optimal in the combination of essential hypercholesterolemia and hyperhpemia. [Pg.475]

Much has been discovered recently regarding the molecular mechanisms and pathways involved in sleep and its associated disorders. It is hoped that this knowledge will lead to improved therapeutics lacking the side effects of currently available drugs. [Pg.1137]

The predominant mechanism of AF and atrial flutter is reentry, which is usually associated with organic heart disease that causes atrial distention (e.g., ischemia or infarction, hypertensive heart disease, valvular disorders). Additional associated disorders include acute pulmonary embolus and chronic lung disease, resulting in pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale and states of high adrenergic tone such as thyrotoxicosis, alcohol withdrawal, sepsis, or excessive physical exertion. [Pg.73]

Though vinca alkaloids are useful in platelet and platelet-associated disorders, it is in treating malignancy that they are truly an indispensable part of the pharmacopoeia. First available in the 1960s, vinca alkaloids now are included as part of virtually every successful combination chemotherapy program, both because of their unique action and because of their unique toxicities. [Pg.233]

After detoxification, psychosocial therapy either in intensive inpatient or in outpatient rehabilitation programs serves as the primary treatment for alcohol dependence. Other psychiatric problems, most commonly depressive or anxiety disorders, often coexist with alcoholism and, if untreated, can contribute to the tendency of detoxified alcoholics to relapse. Treatment for these associated disorders with counseling and drugs can help decrease the rate of relapse for alcoholic patients. [Pg.501]

In the sections Associated disorders in western medicine, some disease names are mentioned. However, it should be borne in mind that a disease in western medicine may involve more than one syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine. As such, the diseases mentioned here are only intended to help the reader to understand the syndrome and to have some corresponding orientation in western medicine. The principles, methods and strategies introduced in each chapter of this book are abstracted from a large number of formulas, integrating the knowledge of single herbs, herbal combinations, syndrome differentiation, treatment methods and treatment sequence. They are the essential part of this book. [Pg.1]
