On behalf of the Working Environment Committee, the plant manager appointed an investigation commission with two members. It consisted of a SHE expert and an engineer with a background in aluminium production. The mandate was to examine the formal, documented SHE management system in the light of the accident and the circumstances around it. The aim was to identify what improvements were necessary. [Pg.184]

Internal audits aim at evaluating whether the company s own SHE management system meets regulatory requirements, recognised national or international standards, company requirements, etc. The client is often top management or the Working Environment committee. [Pg.194]

The working-environment committee for the Ymer field also makes a workplace inspection once a year. The focus here is on ergonomics and industrial hygiene, and experts covering these areas participate in the inspections. [Pg.341]

In many workplaces where hazardous chemicals are used or handled, the wearing of contact lenses is prohibited or discouraged. A careful study of the literature by knowledgeable consultants has refuted these risks. Recent studies and experience have suggested that, in fact, contact lenses do not increase risks but can actually minimize or prevent injury in many situations. Because of the ever-increasing use of contact lenses and the benefits they provide, the American Chemical Society Committee on Chemical Safety, having studied and reveiwed the issue, is of the consensus that contact lenses can be worn in most work environments provided the same approved eye protection is worn as required ofother workers in the area. Clearly, the type of eye protection needed depends upon the circumstances. It should be stressed that contact lenses, by themselves, do not provide adequate protection in any environment in which the chance of an accidental splash of a chemical can reasonably be anticipated. ... [Pg.14]

World Health Organization (WHO) identify Biosafety Levels 1,2, 3, and 4 and in the United Kingdom the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) categorizes Laboratory Containment Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (4-6). All share the same objective to identify biosafety or laboratory containment levels that minimize the risk to the laboratory worker, to the outside community, and to the environment. At Biosafety/Laboratory Containment Level 2, exposure risks to the laboratory worker arise mainly from contact through a contaminated work environment. As the risk of airborne infection increases, Biosafety/ Laboratory Containment Level 3 provides facilities to prevent aerosol transmission. Additional safeguards to protect the outside community and the environment are found at Biosafety/Laboratory Containment Level 4, which is... [Pg.17]

Given the fact that most labor organizations share a common goal with the safety and loss prevention professional—to create a safe and healthy work environment in the workplace—a labor organization may be interested in a joint venture or providing specific information or assistance regarding problems common to both entities. Many of the labor organizations have safety professionals on staff, as well as safety committees and information that may be provided upon request. [Pg.61]

Conventional wisdom suggests that standard setting within the work environment is a matter for joint decision making between the employer and the employees. Consequently, legislation introduced to provide for self-regulation in the worlq)Iace clearly identifies a role for health and safety representatives and health and safety committees in both workplace inspections and standard setting. [Pg.171]
