Joint decision making

Besides the intake interview, which can help gather information, there are a number of assessment measures for determining the quality of an important interpersonal relationship. The questions on these measures generally ask about things like communication styles, satisfaction in the relationship, joint decision making, and in some cases, abusive behavior. Two of the most well-known measures are the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Spanier, 1976) and the Marital Satisfaction Inventory (Snyder, 1979). Therapists and counselors also may choose to interview couples together (with the consent of client and partner), and some therapists may recommend couples therapy (see Chapter 5) as part of the overall approach to treatment if deemed appropriate to help the client. Relationship assessments can yield important information that may be useful when working with couples. 

Strengthening Science-Based Decision Making for Sustainable Management of Ground Water in Mexico was a joint workshop between the U.S. National Academies and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. It was held February 8-10, 2004, in Merida, Mexico. 

A subdivision in the types of decision making clarifies the kinds of people involved. There are public decision-makers who make either policy or management decisions about on-site behaviour. There are marketers in joint public-private cooperative endeavours whose interests include such factors as what will influence travellers to come to place A, B or C. There are also business decision makers concerned with the design and financial success of tourism products. These kinds of interests focus on what tourists will prefer and how they make their travel choices and purchases. Tourism industry lobby groups may also be interested in select tourist behaviour issues, particularly topics such as user-pays fees and taxes on activities. 

A potential answer to Stewart and Vogt s questions will be presented, but two other challenges are noteworthy. A second issue is that the choice models typically represent an individual s choice process. Arguably the role of other people is implicated in the individual constraints section, but the notion of shared, joint or social decision making is not fully developed in the existing literature. Nevertheless there is research suggesting that, at least in Western countries, the family vacation decision is most often the result of a joint decision-making process (Fodness, 1992) or at least one with multiple family influences (Lee Beatty, 2002 Zalatan, 1998).
