For jet fuels, the elimination of free water using filters and coalescers by purging during storage, and the limit of 5 ppm dissolved water are sufficient to avoid incidents potentially attributable to water contamination formation of micro-crystals of ice at low temperature, increased risk of corrosion, growth of micro-organisms. [Pg.250]

Although the process requires the addition of a phosphate donor, such as glycerol-2-phosphate, it may be a valuable tool for cleaning water contaminated with radionuchdes. An alternative mode of uranium precipitation is driven by sulfate-reducing bacteria such as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans which reduce U(VI) to insoluble U(IV). When combined with bicarbonate extraction of contaminated soil, this may provide an effective treatment for removing uranium from contaminated soil (85). [Pg.37]

Monoethan olamine and monoisopropan olamine may be moderately toxic by absorption through the skin. Specifications and Packaging. Aluminum chloride s catalytic activity depends on its purity and particle size. Moisture contamination is an important concern and exposure to humid air must be prevented to preserve product integrity. Moisture contamination can be deterrnined by a sample s nonvolatile material content. After subliming, the material remaining is principally nonvolatile aluminum oxide. Boiler Deposits. Deposition is a principal problem in the operation of steam generating equipment. The accumulation of material on boiler surfaces can cause overheating and/or corrosion. Both of these conditions frequentiy result in unscheduled downtime. Common feed-water contaminants that can form boiler deposits include calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, aluminum, siUca, and (to a lesser extent) silt and oil. Most deposits can be classified as one of two types scale that crystallized directiy onto tube surfaces or sludge deposits that precipitated elsewhere and were transported to the metal surface by the flowing water. [Pg.263]

Only trace amounts of side-chain chlorinated products are formed with suitably active catalysts. It is usually desirable to remove reactive chlorides prior to fractionation in order to niinimi2e the risk of equipment corrosion. The separation of o- and -chlorotoluenes by fractionation requires a high efficiency, isomer-separation column. The small amount of y -chlorotoluene formed in the chlorination cannot be separated by fractionation and remains in the -isomer fraction. The toluene feed should be essentially free of paraffinic impurities that may produce high boiling residues that foul heat-transfer surfaces. Trace water contamination has no effect on product composition. Steel can be used as constmction material for catalyst systems containing iron. However, glass-lined equipment is usually preferred and must be used with other catalyst systems. [Pg.54]

Insecticide methomyl is a very toxic pesticide and is highly soluble in water (57.9 g/1). It has a low sorption affinity to soil and can cause groundwater and surface water contamination in agricultural areas. Solubilities of methomyl in different solvents are in methanol 1000 g/1, in aceton 730 g/1, in ethanol 420 g/1, in isopropanol 220 g/1, in toluene 30 g/1. [Pg.238]

Water contamination is a constant threat. The sources of water are many—atmospheric condensation, steam leaks, oil coolers, and reservoir leaks. Rusting of machine parts and the effects of rust particles in the oil system are the major results of water in oil. In addition, water forms an emulsion and, combined with other impurities, such as wear metal and rust particles, acts as a catalyst to promote oil oxidation. [Pg.550]

Water contamination in the oil system can cause serious damage to turbomachinery, and every reasonable effort should be made to, first, prevent its entrance into the system, and second, provide suitable removal equipment if water cannot be effectively kept out. Experience indicates that designers and equipment operators can be more effective in keeping water out of the system. Since the main sources of contamination are atmospheric condensation, steam leaks, and faulty oil coolers, preventive measures should be taken. [Pg.551]

Lubrication skid. The gas turbine lubrication skid is usually independent of the steam turbine skid as the lubrication oil is usually synthetic due to the high temperatures in the gas turbine. Another reason is due to water contamination of the lubrication oil from the steam turbine. It is advisable to have the lubrication system be totally independent. The gas turbine lubrication skid would report to the gas turbine controller. Since the lubrication system is also used for providing cooling, it is usually operated for about 20 minutes after the gas turbine is shutdown. The lubrication skid contains at least three pumps, two pumps in which each can provide the head required and a third pump, which is usually recommended to be a DC drive for emergency use. These pumps and their control fall under the drive level hierarchy. [Pg.638]

EPA must first make determinations about which contaminants to regulate. These determinations are based on health risks and the likelihood that the contaminant occurs in public water systems at levels of concern. The National Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate List (CCL), published March 2, 1998, lists contaminants that (1) are not already regulated under SDWA (2) may have adverse health effects (3) are known or anticipated to occur in public water systems and (4) may require regulations under SDWA. Contaminants on the CCL are divided into priorities for regulation, health research and occurrence data collection. [Pg.12]
