The objective of this chapter is to present to the reader the many facets of thermal microscopy. The compound collections used to select the desired fragments were the 2001 version of ACD (Available Chemicals Directory) which contains 267 compounds, and a database of 1.6 M compounds from 23 chemical vendors. Removing duplicates from both databases yields 1.79 M compounds. 

For some widely practiced processes, especially in the petroleum industry, reliable and convenient computerized models are available from a number of vendors or, by license, from proprietary sources. Included are reactor-regenerator of fluid catalytic cracking, hydro-treating, hydrocracking, alkylation with HF or H2SO4, reforming with Pt or Pt-Re catalysts, tubular steam cracking of hydrocarbon fractions, noncatalytic pyrolysis to ethylene, ammonia synthesis, and other processes by suppliers of catalysts. Vendors of some process simulations are listed in the CEP Software Directory (AIChE, 1994). 

There is a wealth of databases that code available compounds typically in the two-dimensional standard data (2D-SD) format including connectivity from MACCS (32, 64). The most common databases are the Available Chemicals Directory (ACD) (42), Spresi (65), Chemical Abstracts Database (66), and the National Cancer Institute Database (67, 68). Columns and review sections in journals or newsletters can help the professional keep abreast of new resources or provide comparative information on established resources in selected areas. Collections of reviews are also available online in such sources as Comprehensive Core Medical Library (CCML) by Ovid Technologies, Inc., Book Review Index (online and in print) by Wilson, and the National Library of Medicine s TOXLINE database. Reviews of popular works dealing with consumer health or environmental concerns can also be found in newspapers, popular magazines, and consumer organization newsletters. Summaries and reviews of online databases and databanks can be found in the information science journals, directories of online resources, and produc-er/vendor documentation. 

This collection of several CD-ROM products provides a wealth of legislative, regulatory, handbook, directory, numeric, and bibliographic information focusing on occupational health, workplace safety, environmental hazards, regulatory information, and safety topics. Comprehensive in its coverage of the electronic services on the market, this set covers over 20,000 databases and online services. Aeronautical and aerospace engineers work in a large industry and their efforts result in the production of complex products. The nature of this business lends itself to the production of directories to help individuals and companies keep track of new aircraft, space, and launch vehicles, and to find vendors of related products and services. Some of the mtgor directories in the field are presented here, but there are more including a number produced by Jane s Information Group Limited. The Web is also a rich source of similar information.

The.se databases have an important role to fill from a supply point of view, and mention should be made of the MDL Available Chemicals Directory (ACD), which coordinates the offerings of many suppliers. Containing over 240 catalogs representing over 500000 products and 2(X)000 substances, the ACD provides an efficient way to reliably source and comparison-shop for commercially available chemicals. The database contains all of the necessary information to select a vendor s product on the basis of a review of the purity, grade, and quantity desired, and then to place an order with the manufacturer or a local distributor.
