Availability Code

Quite a number of multizone airflow models have been developed and are available. An overview of available codes, physical models applied, and necessary input parameters is given in Orme. - An intermodel comparison of five models can be found in Allard. Four typical and widely used codes are presented below. 

Computational catalysis has enjoyed rapid progress as computer speed and available codes have allowed more realistic catalytic cycles to be studied. Ye Xu (Oak Ridge National Lab, USA) shows that the transition in heterogeneous catalysis from a primarily empirical science to one that is based on first principles will provide new materials for experimental research. Coupled with new imaging methods with greatly improved spatial resolution, and atomically precise synthesis methods, computational approaches hold great promise for the development of catalysts with unprecedented levels of activity and selectivity. 

For a given source, one generates at each point in space the electron distribution in energy (slowing down spectrum) n E) commercially available codes are available for this purpose. 

Many available codes use this kind of approach in order to carry out AIMD simulations. In fact some codes are not even implemented with the Car - Parrinello methods (e.g., cp2k). About the advantages and disadvantages of BOMD over CPMD the interested reader is referred to the seminal book of Marx and Hutter (57).

As examples how to apply the basic techniques several well known perceptual coders are described below. The selection was based on the familiarity of the author with the schemes, not on the scientific or commercial importance of the systems. An overview containing more details about commercially available coding systems can be found in [Brandenburg and Bosi, 1997]. 

The local aspects of liquid-liquid two-phase flow in RE has been the focus of CFD analysis by different research groups (123-126). In principle, all aspects concerning single-phase flow phenomena (residence time distribution, impeller discharge flow rate, etc.) can be tackled, even with complex geometries. However, the two-phase CFD is still a challenge, and the droplet interactions (breakup and coalescence) and mass transfer are not implemented in commercially available codes. Simple FORTRAN programs have been prepared for the reader s use that solve linear and nonlinear equations, retrieve the properties of water and steam, and of air-water mixtures, calculate the vapor pressure of pure substances, calculate enthalpy changes from heat capacity equations, and so on. When dimensioning the components for the HYPP, measurements of the Bunsen reactor and the HI distiller are far from today technology. So it is proposed to split the factory into 10 shops. On this basis each component can be designed using available codes and standard. The pre-conceptual design of a shop and the factory are shown on Figure 2. 

Cosolvents. The effect of organic solvents on the physical properties of water is a historically useful phenomenon and well defined for countless industrii and scientific applications. This phenomenon has always been ignored in the chemical models available for generi usage. Cosolvents affect the dielectric constant of the water, impacting activity coefficient calculations, hydration of species, and adsorption computations. Application of current chemical codes to environmental contamination investigations will require a capability for simulating the effect of a wide variety of miscible solvents on the aqueous system. As the currently available codes are refined, subroutines should be added that address this issue. 

Given the inhomogeneity problem and the structure of the currently available codes, it is helpful to be able to establish zones of the rock mass where the rock properties are essentially statistically homogeneous—again within the context of the modelling objectives. We will concentrate on this subject in the next two sections. 

Fortunately, there are several good public domain GA codes available on the Internet that allow you to quickly start doing your own calculations. This appendix lists a subset of the available codes and gives pointers to accessing them. 

Numerical work at PSI, using the available codes ASTEC and FLOW3D has the main objective to check the ability of such codes to reproduce (with reasonable accuracy) the overall development of stratified mixing layers at various Prandtl numbers.

The opportunity for error or oversight in criticality calculations is probably greater in the a q)lication of a code to a particular problem than in the writing and validation of the code. The first task is to define the required calculations, obtaining information on equipment dimensions, material compositions, and operating procedures. Next, the applicability of available codes must be assessed. Frequently, there are no benchmark data relevant to the system, and some attempt must be made to correlate available data and estimate uncertainties. Then the engineering data must be translated into a form acceptable to the code and punched on cards or entered via a terminal. In either case, some documentation of the actual input data should be maintained.
