Aerospace engineering

Aerospace engineers commonly work in one of several specialty areas such as aerodynamics, structural design, propulsion systems, and guidance and control. [Pg.32]

Aerodynamics involves the efficient design of external surfaces of aerospace vehicles. Aerodynamics engineers supervise the performance of wind tunnel tests measure and predict the forces of lift and drag and develop and test theories of flight performance, stability, and control. [Pg.32]

In the guidance and control specialty, engineers develop instruments for conventional aircraft that provide information directly to a pilot or automatically navigate, maneuver, or control the aircraft. [Pg.32]

These specialists also develop systems that guide and control the trajectories of missiles. Such systems track the missile by radar or on-board equipment, compute and communicate the necessary corrections, and correct precisely the direction and velocity by vernier rockets (6). [Pg.32]

Aerospace engineering offers one of the most exciting and challenging fields of activity for those who choose engineering as a career. [Pg.32]

Since the middle of the 1990s, another computation method, direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), has been employed in analysis of ultra-thin film gas lubrication problems [13-15]. DSMC is a particle-based simulation scheme suitable to treat rarefied gas flow problems. It was introduced by Bird [16] in the 1970s. It has been proven that a DSMC solution is an equivalent solution of the Boltzmann equation, and the method has been effectively used to solve gas flow problems in aerospace engineering. However, a disadvantageous feature of DSMC is heavy time consumption in computing, compared with the approach by solving the slip-flow or F-K models. This limits its application to two- or three-dimensional gas flow problems in microscale. In the... [Pg.96]

Born in 1965 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Marjolein van der Meulen received her Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987. Thereafter, she received her MS (1989) and PhD (1993) from Stanford University. She spent three years as a biomedical engineer at the Rehabilitation R D Center of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, CA. In 1996, Marjolein joined the faculty of Cornell University as an Assistant Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She is also an Assistant Scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. She received a FIRST Award from the National Institutes of Health in 1995 and a Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation in 1999. Her scientific interests include skeletal mechanobiology and bone structural behavior. [Pg.190]

NMR microscopy has become a well-established method in many different areas of research. The scope of the disciplines involved is extremely broad and is still expanding, encompassing chemical, petrochemical, biological and medical research, plant physiology, aerospace engineering, process engineering, industrial food processing, materials and polymer sciences. [Pg.47]

The book is aimed at chemical, mechanical, and aerospace engineers in academia and industry, as well as developers of computational fluid dynamics codes for reacting flows. [Pg.2]
