Use of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (1CP-MS) coupled to a laser-ablation sample introduction system (LA-ICP-MS) as a minimally destructive method for chemical characterization of archaeological materials has gained favor during the past few years. Although still a relatively new analytical technique in archaeology, LA-ICP-MS has been demonstrated to be a productive avenue of research for chemical characterization of obsidian, chert, pottery, painted and glazed surfaces, and human bone and teeth. Archaeological applications of LA-ICP-MS and comparisons with other analytical methods are described.

When a clay piece is dipped, it should be rapidly immersed, shaken vigorously while under the glaze surface, and then drawn out and shaken again to remove excess glaze. 

Bits of brick or mortar may fall from the crown of the kiln onto glazed surfaces. 

Estimate the steady state surface temperature above that of the air ambient assuming a rate of loss of heat of 10 W m 2 K 1, and comment on how this might affect performance in a polluted atmosphere. Coating the glazing surfaces with low-e (low eraissivity) films reduces the /-factor significantly. For multiple-glazed units, it is adequate to coat one of the two surfaces facing each other.

The heat transmitted through the glazing surface and absorbed by the collector is available for heating the brine. The useful amount depends on the fraction that is not lost to the atmosphere or ground.

Surfaces shall be smooth (without scratches) and edges shall not be broken or damaged. Salt glazed surfaces are preferred.

To meet this specification a special cover compound was designed at BTR. It is a carbon-black filled polychloroprene rubber, which forms a smooth, carbonized, glazed surface during the drum friction test, and usually gives a maximum temperature of 200-250 C.
