US military

Originally developed for tyre cords, Kevlar-type materials have also become widely used in composites. Uses include filament-wound rocket motors and pressure vessels, metal-lined Kevlar-overwrapped vessels in the space shuttle, boat and kayak hulls, Kevlar-epoxy helmets for the US military, and as one of the reinforcements in composite lorry cabs. 

The most common of the other specifications are those with the prefix MIL, issued by the US military authorities. M1L-L-2104E approximates to the API CE rating for diesel lubricants, although it also relates to petrol engines that require API SE performance. M1L-L-46152D covers oils for both diesel and petrol engines, and approximates to API SG/CC (Figure 52.5). 

Manufacturers and other bodies have issued their own designations, which may be encountered occasionally. Most important is the US Military specification MIL-L-2105D (which replaced M1L-L-2105C) corresponding to API GL-5, and introduced approval for multi-grade gear oils.

The US military has a need for extreme long-duration unmanned air vehicles (UAV), and a hydrogen-powered, fuel cell-driven electric aircraft is a leading candidate.
